Georgia Stanway has sent a fiery message to her England teammates ahead of their must-win Euro 2025 clash against the Netherlands on Wednesday night.
The Lionesses’ defence of their Euro 2022 crown got off to a disastrous start against France. Sarina Wiegman’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Les Bleus, and could crash out of the tournament altogether if they lose to the Netherlands on Wednesday.
It is another tricky clash for the Lionesses, which pits together the last two winners of the Women’s European Championship.
Bayern Munich star Stanway spoke to the media ahead of the game, and is desperate for the Lionesses to put things right and get their Euro 2025 campaign back on track.
Georgia Stanway is determined for England to do their talking on the pitch after the public inquest into their defeat against France.
She told the media: “I’m fed up of talking now, it’s time that we focus and put things right on the pitch.”
“We’ve spoken about wanting to be proper England. We want to go back to a traditional style of football in terms of tough tackles, remembering why we are here, playing for that little girl that wanted to be here.”
Stanway added: “I had a message from someone I know that said: ‘It is just like a bad night out and you want to forget it as much as possible. Move onto the next one. That’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
Georgia Stanway suggested that there was a lack of communication between England players during their Euro 2025 defeat to France.
She said: “I think we need to demand more from each other. We need to communicate in those moments, and communication isn’t just about speaking but it’s about action.
“If you put a tough tackle in or if somebody’s doing the run for you or if somebody’s running back or pressing forward, those are the little triggers we can almost use as catalyst moments.”
England thought they had taken the lead through Alessia Russo against France. However, Beth Mead was ruled to be fractionally offside in the build-up.
This has led to calls for changes to the offside law from former Premier League and FIFA referee Keith Hackett.
Goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Balitmore gave France a 2-0 lead before Keira Walsh scored a late consolation.
According to the top betting sites in the UK, England are third favourites to finish top of the group. A third-place finish in Group D would see them crash out of Euro 2025.
The Lionesses are priced at 6/1 to win the group, behind France at 3/10 and Netherlands at 10/3.
However, England are 8/13 favourites to beat the Netherlands, who are priced at 10/3 to hand the Lionesses another defeat.
