As Milan Futuro continue to slide downhill in a difficult downhill season, the question has to be asked: what if they were really relegation from Serie C?
As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, the Milan first team and Milan Futuro are separated by just a few metres in terms of the clubhouses and training fields. They observe each other and in some ways it almost seems like they are in front of the mirror.
Both have suffered an uninterrupted series of difficulties and turbulence due to a sort of curse that hovers over Milanello, and there seems to be no way to break it. What the two teams have in common is a campaign that is far below expectations, and the change of coach mid-season.
Focusing specifically on the Futuro, there is a concrete risk of relegation to Serie D (from this season also possible for the second teams, unlike in the past). Milan, who emigrated a few days ago from the hands of Daniele Bonera to those of Massimo Oddo, lost to bottom-placed Legnago at the weekend.
In doing so, Legnago drew level on points with the Rossoneri, who are now second-bottom above Sestri Levante. Whoever finishes last slips directly into Serie D; from 16th to 19th place there are relegation play-offs; survival is nine points away.
More Stories about Milan Futuro
There are nine games left until the end of the season and there is a lot of ground to recover. What happens if the Futuro drop down a division? Well, the leadership have not yet asked themselves the question so directly.
More than anything because, from what we understand, an either/or scenario would not arise anyway. Translated: if Milan Futuro really did play at the ‘amateur’ level in 2025-26 there would be no corporate U-turn.
The project would continue, because the cornerstone of everything would remain standing: the connection, the synergy between the first and second team, with a view to internally developing talents suitable for Serie A and European competitions.
In short, the reason why Futuro came to life would not disappear due to a possible relegation. It is also a question of investment: the project cost €12m, a figure that increased after the reinforcements during the transfer windows.
The second question is of a regulatory nature. The Rossoneri squad have signed professional contracts, but Serie D is an amateur championship: could bureaucratic issues arise? The answer is no and the reason is simple.
Milan Futuro participates in Serie C but technically remains a team associated with Lega Serie A. The contracts are therefore deposited with the body that oversees the top league and there is no direct association with Serie C or Serie D.
In the event of relegation, the possibility of being able to re-apply for Serie C remains, as happened for the current season. However, the slot for ‘second teams’ is based on the ranking in Serie A, and Inter may wish to take it with their own project.
