AC Milan had two things to celebrate before last night’s game against Cagliari: the Supercoppa Italiana triumph and the life of Fabio Cudicini.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that there was a need for something shiny in a stadium that this year has seen too many draws, too many grumbles and too many jeers. As Sergio Conceiçao says, a Supercoppa won’t be enough to satisfy everyone, but it is a starting point to savour.

There was a new-look tunnel ahead of the game, which had pictures of the team’s win out in Saudi Arabia, in particular the trophy lift after the 3-2 victory over Inter. That was just the beginning of the festivities planned.

Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez took the trophy to the centre circle and then raised it towards the Curva Sud while the highlights of the derby final played on the big screen with the crowd accompanying the goals with ‘olè’, until the final celebration and the applause that accompany the trophy off the pitch.

After months of indifference, we once again hear the name of the coach shouted back by the fans. As Gegio (the stadium announcer) shouted ‘Sergio’, the call back came from the over 70,000 in attendance: ‘Conceiçao’. It was partly a welcome, and partly thanks for delivering silverware so soon.

It was not just an evening of celebrations. A few metres away, next to the goal under the Sud, Mike Maignan spread out a black goalkeeper jersey with the No.1 on the back. It was a tribute to Cudicini, the legendary Milan goalkeeper who passed away in midweek.

Images of the ‘black spired’ also rolled on the big screens, in black and white, and another round of applause came from the Meazza crowd. A different pre-match routine, and very emotional.
