AC Milan have already pocketed a nice amount from this season’s edition of the Champions League, but there are still many millions up for grabs.
La Gazzetta dello Sport have done some calculations, starting with Milan who will get between €54-62m from the first phase of the competition, depending on whether or not they win their last two games against Girona and Dinamo Zagreb.
Inter would get €75m if they won their remaining fixtures, while Juventus and Atalanta oscillate between €61-70m. These are realistic projections based on the current standings and by improving their position, the figures will also increase for each team.
The new formula has increased the total revenues and prize money of the clubs. The Champions League, Europa League and Conference are now worth €4.4bn in annual revenue. After deducting the 9% of tournament costs (€387m) and the 5% share that goes to UEFA (€230m), the clubs are left with around €3.8bn (86%) to split.
This also includes the preliminary stages of the competition. Of the overal figure, €2.5bn are for the 36 Champions League ‘league phase’ finalists (which was around €2bn in the previous three-year cycle, when it was group stages).

The new system rewards results more and less the historical ranking and the market pool (i.e. the value of TV rights in the various countries). The more you win, the further you go, the more you earn. The top 8 in the rankings pass directly to the last 16, those from 9th to 24th go to the play-offs.
As mentioned, Milan already have €54m in their pocket, but can go up to €62m with two victories. With that they would secure direct access to the last 16 too, which opens another treasure chest of potential income.
The knockout round can almost double the final figure: getting past the round of 16 is worth €11m, the quarter-finals €12.5m, the semi-finals €15m and winning it brings €25m (€18.5m for the losing finalist). Then, €4m for participation in the European Super Cup must be added.
