Denzel Dumfries may be preparing for a Champions League final and title push with Inter Milan, but Premier League eyes are watching closely. The Dutch international has emerged as a player in demand – and former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes he could be a perfect fit at Old Trafford.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville praised Dumfries’ impact, especially in high-pressure games. Reflecting on Inter’s performances in Europe, Neville said: “Do you know what I kept thinking, I was thinking with United playing with their back five and the wing-backs, I was thinking about that right wing-back Dumfries, for United.”
“I’d like to see him in the Premier League. Dumfries, how good was he? Unbelievable. He’s so good, he’s so good.”
Neville’s comments speak volumes about Dumfries’ suitability to United’s current system under Amorim, whose 3-4-2-1 formation prioritises aggressive wing-play and athletic full-backs.

Dumfries has continued to build his reputation this season, racking up 10 goals and six assists in 41 appearances. His performance against Barcelona across two Champions League ties – including two goals and three assists – has caught the attention of pundits and scouts alike.
His resume at Inter is not short of honours either. Since joining from PSV in 2021, he’s helped the Nerazzurri win one Serie A title, two Coppa Italias, and three Italian Super Cups. This campaign, Inter are again challenging for top honours domestically and in Europe.
While Dumfries thrives in Simone Inzaghi’s system, his style seems ready-made for the English game: powerful, forward-thinking, and physically robust.
United’s interest may face complications. Liverpool have also been linked with Dumfries as a potential successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the England star readying to depart for Real Madrid on a free transfer – a situation gathering momentum behind the scenes.
Alan Shearer, another voice on Dumfries’ growing status, recently weighed in with praise of his own. “Although Denzel Dumfries plays in a completely different system with Inter Milan, there’s no doubt that when I’ve seen him in that system, he’s shone.”
“His energy has been incredible and the most impressive thing for me is how good he’s been in forward positions… Defensively is a different question, but certainly offensively he’s a very, very good player.”
Shearer also acknowledged the connection with incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot, suggesting his fellow Dutchman would be well aware of Dumfries’ strengths and could greenlight a move.

For Manchester United, the move makes tactical and financial sense. Dumfries is entering his prime at 29, has experience at the highest level, and could offer a ready-made solution in a formation already favouring wing-backs.
If United’s recruitment team believe Amorim is the long-term answer, then providing him with personnel tailored to his setup must follow. Dumfries isn’t a luxury signing – he’d be a necessity for a side that needs structure, pace, and final-third quality from its flanks.
The only question left is whether United will act quickly enough.
Gary Neville’s comments feel both exciting and logical. Denzel Dumfries is not just a highlight-reel player – he’s someone who thrives in a structured, wing-back-focused setup that Rúben Amorim would likely implement.
What United have lacked in recent seasons is a consistent, dynamic presence on the right. Diogo Dalot has moments, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is defensively solid but limited going forward, and the right flank often feels like an afterthought. Dumfries could transform that.
His contributions against Barcelona alone show he can deliver on the biggest stage. We’ve seen United chase big names before, but this one feels different – strategic rather than star-chasing.
Neville putting his stamp of approval on Dumfries suggests serious consideration. If the club is going to back Amorim properly, it must provide the players to make the system work. Dumfries feels like the right player at the right time.
What’s also appealing is the battle with Liverpool. If Trent is on his way out and Dumfries could come in, denying them that replacement would be a double win for United fans.
This could be a key signing – if the board has the foresight and decisiveness to get it done.
