Arsenal defender Gabriel has spoken of the team’s hunger to “reach new heights this season” as they aim to finally break their 21-year Premier League title drought.
Since arriving from Lille in 2020, the 27-year-old has established himself as a key member of Mikel Arteta’s squad.
After finishing as runners-up in the Premier League in each of the last three seasons, and having reached the semi-finals of both the Carabao Cup and Champions League last term, the Gunners enter the new campaign under growing pressure to finally deliver a trophy.
“I don’t think we can give excuses; we did everything we could in the last three years,” Gabriel explained.
“I feel like we had a little bit of bad luck sometimes, but we all believe that we can win big titles.
“We have let a couple of titles slip through our fingers recently. We almost won, but I think this year, things will be different. I have a lot of faith in that.”
The club have moved swiftly in the transfer market this summer, securing key targets ahead of pre-season with new sporting director Andre Berta at the helm.
Martin Zubimendi has completed his long anticipated move to the Emirates, while they have also strengthened their squad depth with the additions of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and midfielder Christian Norgaard.
They are also set to be followed by more additions, with Noni Madueke closing in on a move from Chelsea. The Gunners are also trying to wrap up deals for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
“[The new signings] definitely excites me,” Gabriel said. “We want to have the best players; to be in the dispute for titles, you have to have the best players.
“We’re really happy with the players here and happy with the signings. We think the club is on the right track to do everything correctly like that.”
In what feels like a new signing in itself, Gabriel committed his future to Arsenal last month by signing a new long-term deal that keeps him at the club until 2029.
Although the Brazilian defender was already under contract until 2027, the extension highlights his significance to Arteta’s long-term vision in north London.
The Arsenal defender reflected on his time at the club, adding: “I’ve been at the club for five years now and I’ve seen how much the club has grown. I am here to win big titles, and I do believe that this season will be different.
When asked if there was any persuading factor to sign a new deal, Gabriel responded: “I only have one thing to say, and Mikel says it: we are ready to reach new heights this season.”
Arsenal will kick off their pre-season tour of Asia with a clash against Massimiliano Allegri’s AC Milan on Wednesday, followed by an all-Premier League encounter with Newcastle United on Sunday in Singapore.
They will then travel to Hong Kong to face rivals Tottenham Hotspur on July 31.
