Oriol Romeu’s dream return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona looks set to come to a definitive end this summer.
After a challenging season where he struggled to secure a permanent spot in the starting eleven, the midfielder’s future has now been sealed following the club’s strict directions.
According to Mundo Deportivo, new head coach Hansi Flick has made it clear that Romeu does not feature in his plans for the upcoming season.
The 32-year-old has been informed directly that he is free to find a new club, despite having one year remaining on his contract with the Blaugrana.
The decision finalises what has been a difficult chapter for the La Masia graduate. His challenging 2023/24 season at Barcelona, where he was unable to replicate his commanding Girona form, led to the loan move last summer.

Now, a permanent departure is viewed as a necessary step for both parties, allowing Barcelona to move on and Romeu to find stability elsewhere.
Barcelona have even considered the possibility of terminating the midfielder’s contract, similar to the strategy they employed with Clement Lenglet.
While he will now be assessing his options, the report suggests Romeu has established a clear priority for his next move: making his return to Girona a permanent one.
The midfielder is said to be keen on rejoining the club where he enjoyed immense success, both before his Barcelona move and during his recent loan spell.
Although Romeu was nowhere near as successful upon his return to Girona, he still feels at home in Montilivi.
The veteran midfielder, therefore, wants to return to an environment that he is used and play for a leadership role for the club next season.
