French outlet L’Equipe have been forced to apologise for a headline they published about former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood.

The English forward was sold to Olympique de Marseille this summer after it was decided that he could not return to Old Trafford after his legal problems involving domestic abuse charges.

Despite opposition from the mayor of the French city and numerous fans, a deal was completed in July.

Greenwood has begun life in Ligue 1 in some style scoring a brace on debut and adding a third goal in two matches at the weekend against Reims.

The Telegraph report that L’Equipe have had to apologise for their headline marking Greenwood’s positive start in France by using the words “unconditional love” in their headline about the player.

“L’Equipe has responded with an apology on its own webpage, insisting it strongly opposes domestic violence and the ‘love’ towards Greenwood was from Marseille supporters.”

Going into more detail the French publication claimed, “Our Tuesday cover story about Mason Greenwood sparked a lot of outrage. When a cover story is so misunderstood, it’s a failure.”

“The idea was to describe in three pages [including the front page] how Mason Greenwood had succeeded in his sporting debut with OM, and how his three goals in two matches earned him ‘the unconditional love’ of his club and a very large majority of its supporters ‘even if it meant forgetting an affair that continues to tarnish his reputation at home, in Manchester’.”

The paper went on to claim the love is not from them and they went on to list the numerous times they have covered stories on the player’s controversial past and how they have raised the serious issue of domestic abuse numerous times in relation to coverage over Greenwood.

They were also quick to claim that “the video and photos of his partner being attacked revolted us.”

In his press conference upon signing for the Ligue 1 side, Greenwood admitted he was aware of the controversy that his move created but that he wants to draw a line under it and just focus on football.

His new boss Roberto De Zerbi has also commented on the situation and claimed that the only way people will move on from the topic is if he continues to score goals and be successful with his new side.
