Freiburg following fellow Bundesliga clubs St. Pauli and Werder Bremen in leaving Elon Musk’s X platform in favour of Bluesky, owing to “rapid radicalisation of the platform.”

In a statement released by the club, Freiburg went in-depth on their reasoning behind their decision to ditch X.

“The sports club is immediately ceasing its activities on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Values such as diversity and tolerance, which the club upholds in its statutes, are being trampled on there.

The platform’s rapid radicalization is evident through a flood of hate, incitement, and conspiracy theories. Regulation and sanctions are almost nonexistent. On the contrary, Elon Musk, who took over Twitter two years ago, is personally responsible for the publication and dissemination of much of this content.

A point has been reached where the sports club can no longer simply carry on as before. Standing against xenophobia, racism, and discrimination is part of our identity. Remaining on the platform can no longer be justified in light of X’s current trajectory.

SC Freiburg will therefore take its first steps on the platform Bluesky. We invite all interested parties—especially the vibrant SC community that has developed on Twitter over the years and will no longer receive updates from us on X—to follow SC Freiburg on Bluesky for daily content.

In the coming weeks and months, we will observe and evaluate how our presence on this new platform is received.”

This comes after St. Pauli left X on November 14 while Werder Bremen followed suit last week. BILD also reported last week that Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg are on the verge of leaving X, while Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim could all follow.
