Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi is targetting an extended stay as Les Phocéens boss, according to a feature in L’Equipe. After leaving Brighton and Hove Albion last summer, the Italian manager notably rejected the chance to join Manchester United to sign a three-year deal with the Southern Ligue 1 team. De Zerbi’s debut in the French top-tier had some setbacks. The Italian manager even threatened to leave his position after a chastening 3-1 home defeat to promoted side AJ Auxerre.
Since this loss against Christophe Pélissier’s team, Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille have won five games and drawn one in their last six outings. Most of all, Les Phocéens are arguably the most exciting Ligue 1 team to watch right now, as embodied by their remarkable 5-1 humbling of Le Havre this Sunday.
The former Shakhtar and Sassuolo head coach has managed to shape a team that, so far, plays according to his attacking-minded possession-based style. L’Equipe reports that De Zerbi sees himself staying “four, five years” at Marseille. Should De Zerbi get his wish, he would become the longest-serving manager in the rich history of Olympique de Marseille.
