Liverpool continue to strengthen their squad, aiming to defend their Premier League crown and make waves in the Champions League. After a record-breaking first season under Arne Slot, the club is showing no signs of slowing down, with high-profile signings such as Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz already signalling a bold intent.
While over £200million has been invested in new talent, sales this summer have left Liverpool with substantial resources still available to enhance the squad. This transfer window remains a crucial opportunity to secure the next generation of football stars.
The latest transfer news has caught the attention of football legends. Arrigo Sacchi, the former AC Milan manager, shared his thoughts on Giovanni Leoni’s prospective move to Liverpool in a column for La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Liverpool would make a great signing, and he could thrive in the Premier League. It’s a shame he’s eluding the big clubs in Serie A,” Sacchi wrote.

Sacchi expressed mixed emotions about the transfer, saying, “On the one hand, the news makes me immensely happy, and on the other, it makes me a little angry. Let me explain – I’m happy that an Italian player is receiving praise from a major club like Liverpool, but I wish AC Milan or Inter, Juventus, or Napoli were competing for his transfer, not a foreign club.”
Liverpool face a pressing need to reinforce their defence after the departure of Jarell Quansah. Despite Arne Slot’s broader ambitions for midfield and attack, the uncertainty surrounding Joe Gomez makes signing a new centre-back unavoidable.
Giovanni Leoni, at just 18, presents the perfect solution for Liverpool. With Virgil van Dijk still two years away from the end of his contract, there is an ideal window to mentor the young Italian and develop him into a top-class centre-back. Leoni’s technical ability and tactical awareness are already drawing attention, making him a player with long-term potential to thrive at Anfield.
Liverpool’s recruitment strategy continues to focus on players with significant growth potential. Florian Wirtz, though already performing at the top level at 22, still has room for development. Similarly, Marc Guehi remains on the club’s radar, and while he may exceed Liverpool’s typical age limits for defenders, letting opportunities like him or Leoni slip by would be unwise.
Leoni’s transfer, reportedly valued around £30million, is poised to provide a platform for him to hone his skills within a top-flight team. It is now reported that Leoni will undergo a medical on Merseyside later today.
