The month of February will see all four teams with a game to spare in Serie A play their rescheduled fixtures, during which they will have to stick to the rules regarding the use of new signings on such occasions.

However, the two games present two different scenarios – Inter will resume their away fixture at Fiorentina from the 17th minute, which was when the match was interrupted in early December following a medical emergency involving Edoardo Bove.

On the other hand, Milan are set to play the rescheduled match for their postponed October clash at the Stadio Dall’Ara on 26 February, with kick-off scheduled for that day, as the game was called off one day before it was due.

What Serie A rules say about new signings in Fiorentina vs Inter and Bologna vs Milan

As explained by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Lega Serie A statute treats fixtures which were interrupted as a different case, saying that the continuation of the game can be played by “players who were already registered with the two clubs at the time of the interruption, regardless of whether they were included in the matchday squad on the day of the interruption”.

As a result, Fiorentina’s new signings Michael Folorunsho, Pablo Marì, Ched Ndour, Nicolò Fagioli and Nicolò Zaniolo, as well as Inter’s Nicola Zalewski, won’t be eligible for the Stadio Artemio Franchi clash.

Such rules could particularly penalise Viola coach Raffaele Palladino, as his club also sold Cristian Biraghi, Jonathan Ikone, Michael Kayode, Christian Kouame, Martinez Quarta and Riccardo Sottil during the January transfer market, meaning he will have to rely on a greatly restricted squad for the occasion.

The same limitations won’t apply to Bologna and Milan, who will be able to field all their new signings, from Davide Calabria to Santiago Gimenez and Joao Felix.
