As we saw during the January transfer window, Manchester City has begun the rebuild of Pep Guardiola’s squad. Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico all arrived at the club in a busy transfer window for City. That rebuild is set to continue in the summer. But off the pitch, it does appear that Pep Guardiola’s staff may be in for a change. A new report indicates that club legend Fernandinho is reportedly set to be offered a coaching role at Manchester City. That is a move that makes sense as City continue their rebuild.
Enzo Krieger has reported for CityXtra that Fernandinho is set to be offered a role in Manchester City’s first team coaching set-up. Furthermore, Krieger reports that Fernandinho completed a Club Management course with FIFA in January. This qualification has opened up the possibility of Fernandinho joining Pep Guardiola’s staff. Krieger further reports that Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain have offered the former Brazilian international the opportunity to be an assistant coach at Manchester City.
There is definitely merit to the idea of bringing Fernandinho on board as an assistant coach at Manchester City. During his time at the club, he established himself as a City legend. He was a key player in Pep Guardiola’s side during his time at the club. He also played arguably the toughest role in Pep Guardiola’s system. Playing as a defensive midfielder the Brazilian midfielder was crucial to City’s play. He understood how Guardiola wanted to play and was crucial to bringing that vision to life on the pitch.
The hope is that if he does accept a role on Pep Guardiola’s staff, he could do similar as a coach. Fernandinho could play a pivotal role in the development of Nico and Nico O’Reilly for example. There are a host of other midfielders that the City legend could help nurture and develop. There is also the possibility of Fernandinho imparting his knowledge and wisdom across the Manchester City squad. Given that the City is entering a rebuild, that could prove to be an invaluable asset.
There is certainly merit to the idea of Fernandinho joining Pep Guardiola’s staff for next season and beyond. It’s a story to watch for and could be a move that pays off in a big way for Manchester City if the club legend accepts the club’s offer.
