Felipe Martins, a veteran midfielder with more than a decade of experience in Major League Soccer, has officially announced his retirement from professional football.
The 34-year-old most recently played for Orlando City SC before returning to Brazil earlier this year to join FC Cascavel. His stint with the fourth-division club ended in April, and he has not signed with another team since.
In a social media post, Martins expressed disappointment at the league's lack of acknowledgment. Despite his long tenure in MLS—including time with Montreal Impact, New York Red Bulls, Vancouver Whitecaps, D.C. United, and Orlando City—the league did not issue an official statement marking his departure.
Supporters were more vocal. Several fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank Martins for his contributions and call for a symbolic farewell, particularly in New York, where he played more than 100 games and won the 2015 Supporters’ Shield.
Martins began his MLS career in 2012 with Montreal and became a reliable option in central midfield, known for his work rate, physicality, and occasional goal contributions. His most productive years came with the Red Bulls, but he remained a steady figure across every roster he joined.
Though never a marquee name, Felipe Martins played a notable role during MLS's period of steady growth. His career reflected the league’s increasing depth and competitiveness in the 2010s, and he earned the respect of both teammates and fans for his consistency.
As MLS continues to evolve, Martins’ career reminds us of the players who helped build its foundation—often without much spotlight but with lasting impact.
