An insight into the stance of Real Madrid star Federico Valverde regarding the inheritance of teammate Toni Kroos’ squad number has today been forthcoming.

The name of midfielder Kroos has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines across not only Spain, but all of Europe over the course of the last 48 hours.

This comes after the 34-year-old announced his decision to call time on his legendary playing career following Germany’s campaign at Euro 2024 this summer.

Despite long-term efforts on the part of the Real Madrid brass to tie their engine room lynchpin down to fresh terms, Kroos has concluded that the time is right to hang up his boots.

As alluded to above, as much means that the former Bayern Munich man’s jersey number is set to become available for next season.

Kroos has long donned the no.8 at the Santiago Bernabéu, a shirt no doubt coveted by several members of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Widespread reports, though, have pointed towards one player as being the clear favourite to take up the eight.

The player in question? Federico Valverde.

And, if the latest word stemming from the media on Thursday is anything to go by, this is a responsibility which Valverde himself appears more than ready to take on.

As per Diario AS:

‘Valverde loves the ‘8’, for its hierarchy in the eleven, the fact that it is an emblematic number, and for the fact that he would be Kroos’ successor.’

His veteran midfield partner has long stood as Valverde’s idol, making his candidacy to take over his jersey nothing short of an honour.

Aurélien Tchouaméni is also keen on the shirt, but Real Madrid and Kroos alike have chosen Valverde as the ‘heir’ to Kroos’ throne in the middle of the park at the Bernabéu.
