Russell Martin has been sacked as Southampton manager following a 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham and with the team bottom of the Premier League.
In a statement, Southampton said: “Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world,” said a Southampton statement.
“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations.
“We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.
“Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the play-off final win in May.”
The focus now turns to who will replace Martin. Here are the frontrunners, according to the odds…
Danny Rohl 8/11
Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl is currently the favourite to take over at Southampton. He has done a fine job in Sheffield, transforming the team from relegation contenders to Championship play-off hopefuls.
Carlos Corberan 7/1
Another Championship manager who has impressed. Corberan reached the play-off final with Huddersfield in 2022 and has been at West Brom for the last two years, where his team have challenged for the play-offs.
Graham Potter 7/1
Linked with near enough every Premier League job that becomes available, Potter has been out of work since leaving Chelsea last year where he was sacked after a disappointing spell.
David Moyes 10/1
Moyes has been out of work since leaving West Ham in the summer, where he won the Conference League and qualified for Europe in three consecutive seasons. With plenty of experience of managing in the Premier League and turning around clubs in trouble, he is a tempting hire.
