Christian Eriksen turned down a “deadline day” offer from Real Betis to remain at Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The 32-year-old midfielder was subject to a last-minute approach by the Spanish side, who wanted to bring him on loan to Andalusia.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, Real Betis were also reported to have expressed an interest in Brazilian winger Antony in a similar deal.

It’s believed, however, that manager Erik ten Hag rejected the advances for both.

But now, as Romano reveals, Eriksen was also unwilling to entertain the approach by the Liga side with “no chance” of a deal as there was “no agreement on player and club side”.

Tweet: “Real Betis had approached Man United for Christian Eriksen as last minute target ahead of Deadline Day. No chance for move as there was no agreement on player and club side, but Betis tried. No formal bid was sent by Ajax to Man United for Eriksen, despite several links.”

Romano also repudiates reports suggesting Ajax had made attempts to bring their former star back to Amsterdam. “No formal bid was sent,” the transfer guru contends.

Eriksen has previously expressed his discontent with his playing time at Old Trafford following a successful first season at the club.

The Danish international saw his opportunities in the first-team dwindle in his sophomore year and that looks set to continue following the acquisition on Manuel Ugarte, alongside the emergence of Toby Collyer – the 20-year-old academy graduate.

Ten Hag’s midfield unit remains slightly light, however.

The sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli, as well as the continued struggles of Casemiro, means United are lacking in experience in the middle of the pitch; something Eriksen provides in abundance.

Despite the 32-year-old’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Old Trafford officials likely took the view that he still has more to offer the club in his final year than the minimal economic benefits of, for example, sending him on loan to Spain for twelve months.
