Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Leeds United's Joe Gelhardt asking price amid potential Hull City interest

Don Goodman believes that Hull City should avoid spending as much as £3-4 million to sign Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United this summer.

It has been reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post that the Whites have set an asking price in that region for the striker.

Gelhardt spent the second half of last season on loan at the MKM Stadium, where he scored five goals from 20 appearances in the Championship.

However, it remains to be seen whether a pursuit will be made for a permanent deal, especially with Ruben Selles since departing as head coach following the end of the campaign.

Goodman believes that Gelhardt’s performances for Hull were simply okay, with the forward struggling to stand out in Selles’ team.

He has claimed that a price tag of £3-4 million is too much, and that Leeds may struggle to offload the player at that figure.

“We’ve spoken about Joe Gelhardt before in terms of him being bought by Hull City, and he’s done okay,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“I think we’ve described it as okay before, not spectacular, and an outlay of £3-4 million on a player that’s just done okay seems a little bit excessive to me.

“I think that’s the thing that would hold Leeds back in actually getting him off the wage bill is probably a price that not too many teams are going to be prepared to pay.”

Joe Gelhardt’s Leeds struggles

Gelhardt first made his break into the first team squad at Elland Road during the 2021/22 campaign, making 20 appearances in the Premier League as the team finished 17th in the table.

However, he has struggled to kick on from there, with his game time proving limited in the seasons since.

This has led to loan moves to the likes of Sunderland and Hull, having been unable to convince Daniel Farke of a regular place in his plans.

The 23-year-old has a contract with the Whites until the summer of 2027.

Patience with Gelhardt pursuit could be rewarded

If Hull, or anyone else, are interested in signing Gelhardt on a permanent fee this summer then they may be better off staying patient and waiting until closer to the end of the market.

Leeds have a strong negotiating position right now given how long is left in the summer, and the fact the player has a contract until 2027.

However, if they want to offload him from their books before the window closes, then the longer it goes on without finding a buyer the more likely they might be to drop their asking price.
