Towards the end of last summer there was widespread frustration about Chelsea’s perceived fumbling of a deal to loan Marc Cucurella to Manchester United.

The left back had had a disappointing first season at Stamford Bridge, and given the massive £60m paid for him, it looked like a disaster signing already. We had Lewis Hall and Ian Maatsen on the books backing up Ben Chilwell, and it looked like Cucurella was barely going to play.

A loan to United would have helped improve our chances of selling Cucurella, while clearing a path for those youngsters to get minutes.

In end the end, the move to Man U fell though, Maatsen sat on the bench and was then loaned out, while Hall was loaned with a purchase clause to Newcastle. Cucurella played all season when fit, with Chilwell ultimately missing the majority of the campaign.

Cucurella has found some form recently in a new system dreamt up by Mauricio Pochettino, but there could yet be a move on the cards.

An exclusive from our writer Simon Phillips says that United have “reignited” their interest in the Spaniard, and are even considering a bid for Chilwell too.

These aren’t the only players they’re looking at, but clearly we can do some business here.

Chelsea need to take stock of left back situation

Given we had so many options at left back a year ago, it’s crazy to think we’ve once again ended up with so much uncertainty in that position.

The sporting directors need to think long and hard about whether the smart move here is to sell Cucurella while we can get decent money for him and start afresh in that position, with a younger but first team ready alternative to Chilwell coming in.

Or do they back Cucurella to continue his improvement, and hope that he and Chilwell are good enough to be the pair in that position going forward?
