Savage is moving up the footballing pyramid in his managerial career - could he soon be in the EFL?

Former Birmingham City, Derby County and Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage is set for a new manager's job, with Forest Green Rovers on the verge of confirming his hiring, sources have exclusively told Football League World.

Savage was a Premier League regular in his playing days, racking up 346 appearances in the top flight of English football for the aforementioned trio, as well as Blackburn Rovers, and also played EFL football for the Rams and Brighton.

Now a manager and part-owner of non-league Macclesfield FC, Savage is set to leave the Cheshire outfit behind for a new challenge.

FLW has been told that Savage is very close to being announced as Forest Green's new manager, and that advanced talks are taking place with the 50-year-old to get the deal over the line.

Steve Cotterill is still officially in his post as manager of the Gloucestershire club, who finished third in the National League last season, but were dumped out of the play-offs at the semi-finals stage by Southend United, who beat them on penalties at The New Lawn.

Owner Dale Vince is set to make a change in the dugout therefore, and Savage is the man he has selected to succeed Cotterill.

Robbie Savage's job with Macclesfield FC as Forest Green Rovers appointment nears

Having retired from professional football in 2011, Savage moved into footballing punditry, but took on a new role in 2020 by getting involved with the rebirth of Macclesfield, after the original club were liquidated after failing to pay their debts.

Savage became a director of the newly-formed club, who were placed in the North West Counties league at the time, and he later became director of football, and then was handed the head coach role in the summer of 2024.

Under Savage, Macclesfield were promoted to the National League North this past season, finishing 26 points clear of Worksop Town by racking up 109, but the ex-Man United prodigy is set to depart the Leasing.com Stadium in favour of a job in the form of Forest Green, which is the division above Macclesfield.
