Lee Hendrie expects Birmingham City to spend again in the summer transfer market following their promotion back to the Championship.

The Blues spent heavily last year after their relegation to League One, building a team for Chris Davies that could go straight back up.

With that now achieved, their focus will be on improving the team so that they can maintain a competitive level in the second tier.

Birmingham owner Tom Wagner will be hoping the club can compete for promotion to the Premier League in the near future amid his ambitious plans to build a 62,000 seater home stadium to replace St. Andrew’s.

Hendrie expects Birmingham to be active in the transfer market again this summer after breaking the League One record for a single transfer last year.

He believes that the club will need some improvements in order to continue on the upwards trajectory that the owners will want to see.

“Listen, I think they’ve established what they needed this season in League One, squad-wise and squad depth,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“And now they’re going to have to step that up.

“I do feel that they have got good players that can step right into the Championship, for sure.

“But be-all and end-all, I think if they want to go again, which I’m sure they will do, their owners are looking to further things on where they want to get into the Premier League.

“I think that they will have to invest and bring that little bit more quality that can certainly stand them a chance in the Championship.

“So, they will have to spend money and I’m sure they will do, having the season they’ve had.”

Birmingham signed Jay Stansfield from Fulham in 2024 in a deal worth a reported £15 million, the most any League One club have ever spent on an individual player.

It would be surprising if Birmingham don’t spend this summer

Wagner’s ambitions for Birmingham have been made quite clear since he took over the club in 2023, and he’s not about to slow down now.

Relegation last year was a setback, but the investment put into the squad showed the American’s commitment to turning things around at the Midlands outfit.

Now that they’ll be back in the Championship, expect further spending to ensure they’re competitive from the offset.
