Lee Hendrie has named two Luton Town players he believes will leave the club in the summer if they are relegated to League One.
Pundit Lee Hendrie believes wing-back Alfie Doughty and striker Carlton Morris will both leave Luton Town in the summer if they are relegated to League One.
After Luton were relegated from the Premier League last season, many expected them to challenge for an immediate return to the top flight this campaign, but it has certainly not worked out that way.
The Hatters parted company with Rob Edwards in January following a poor first half of the season, and Matt Bloomfield made the move from high-flying League One side Wycombe Wanderers to take over at Kenilworth Road.
In addition to the managerial change, Luton brought in seven signings during the January transfer window in an attempt to salvage their season, with Christ Makosso, Kal Naismith, Isaiah Jones, Josh Bowler, Thelo Aasgaard, Millenic Alli and Lasse Nordas all joining the club, but the new arrivals have not had the desired effect so far.
Bloomfield has won just one of his first 10 games in charge of the Hatters, and after the 4-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, his side sit 23rd in the Championship table, five points from safety.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie predicted that Luton could be vulnerable to losing many of their key players if they are relegated to League One, and he believes Doughty and Morris should both look to move on.
Doughty has scored one goal and provided four assists in 22 appearances during an injury-disrupted campaign this season, while Morris has netted seven goals and registered three assists in 33 games, and Hendrie expects both players to attract transfer interest in the summer.
"Alfie Doughty and Carlton Morris must leave Luton if they get relegated to League One," Hendrie said.
"There was a lot of talk about these two players actually making the step up to the Premier League, which they showed they could play in.
"There were clubs that were touted round about taking them for the attributes they have.
"Doughty is direct and a good ball player with good delivery into the box, and particularly with the way teams play, he does offer an awful lot.
"It's the same with Morris, he's a good focal point for certain teams that can play to his strengths for sure.
"He's more than capable of staying in the Championship, and likewise with Alfie Doughty, so you do feel that if they get relegated, most of their top players will be leaving the football club."
Of course, back-to-back relegations would be devastating enough for Luton, but should they drop into League One, they would face the prospect of losing many of their stars, particularly Doughty and Morris.
Having been linked with a move to Brentford in the summer, Doughty will likely again be the subject of interest when the transfer window opens, and although it has not been a particularly prolific season for Morris, he has shown that he can be a dangerous goal threat at Championship level previously.
With games against fellow strugglers Cardiff City, Hull City, Stoke City and Derby County to come before the end of the season, Luton still have the opportunity to prevent a second consecutive relegation, but as their position becomes increasingly perilous, time is running out for them to save their second tier status.
