Federico Balzaretti has slammed reigning Scudetto holders Inter Milan over their early-season approach in Serie A.

During his recent interview with Tuttosport, as reported by FCInterNews, the former Juventus defender spoke harshly of Nerazzurri’s attitude in the league this term.

Simone Inzaghi won his first Serie A title as a manager last season.

And it was a memorable success.

Inter dethroned Napoli in dominant fashion, leaving their competitors in the dust to win the crown with several games to spare.

To put Inter’s dominance in perspective, second-placed AC Milan finished 19 points adrift of the Nerazzurri.

Moreover, former champions Napoli trailed Inzaghi’s charges by 41 points after the curtain dropped.

However, Inter’s success wasn’t just in numbers.

They bend Serie A to their will, with only the relegated Sassuolo getting the better of them.

It suffices to say they boasted a stunning win ratio of 76% and a +67 goal difference.

But something has gone wrong in the early stage of the 2024/25 campaign.

Indeed, Inter have already dropped points in three of their eight league outings.

On that basis, it feels like complacency has started to creep in.

Despite viewing Inter as the Scudetto favorites, Balzaretti insists Inzaghi’s team lacks focus.

Asked whether they’re the best side in Italy, he replied: “Yes, but I don’t see it as focused on Serie A as last year.

“There have already been some slip-ups. These are signs that need to be addressed.”

Balzaretti notes how Inter have declined defensively compared to last year.

“I really like the way Simone Inzaghi has them play, but this year they’ve already conceded a lot of goals from crosses.

“It’s a matter of focus. Last year, the strong objective was the second star, but this year the focus has shifted towards the Champions League.”
