Yann Sommer has made it clear that he’s “not thinking of retirement” as he’s still feeling at his best at Inter Milan.
The 36-year-old Nerazzurri goalkeeper spoke to Swiss German-language broadcaster SRF, via FCInterNews.
Sommer joined Inter in the summer of 2023. He arrived from Bayern Munich.
By the time that Sommer joined Inter, he was already a very well-established name.
The Swiss had broken through with Basel in his home country before spending a decade in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich.
Sommer cemented a reputation for himself as one of the German top flight’s best and most consistent keepers.
Moreover, the Swiss international also frequently shone on the international stage.
Inter therefore knew exactly what they were getting with Sommer. They brought him in precisely to be a safe and reliable pair of hands after the departure of Andre Onana.
Inter did not, however, sign Sommer to be their goalkeeper for the long-term future.
The Swiss was 34 when he arrived. And he just turned 36 this month.
But Sommer is still the starting keeper for the Nerazzurri, without any doubt. And he made clear that “Right now at Inter, I feel really good.”
“The club gives me a lot,” the 36-year-old said.
“Both mentally and physically. I’m still a long way from finishing my career.”
Meanwhile, Sommer said that he’s “never thought about” the possibility of a move to the Saudi Pro League.
On the other hand, Sommer wasn’t ruling out a return to Basel.
“It’s the club of my heart,” the Inter keeper noted. “I had some wonderful experiences there… We’ll see.”
Inter have signed Josep Martinez as a long-term heir to Sommer. The Spaniard made his Nerazzurri debut in the Coppa Italia against Udinese.
There were positive signs from Martinez.
But Sommer has nevertheless held down his starting spot this season in Serie A and the Champions League.
