Manchester City have been the Premier League’s dominant force in recent years, especially since Pep Guardiola arrived at the club.
Since taking over at the club in July 2016, the Catalan tactician has led City to five of seven possible league titles, setting a number of records along the way, including the most points in a single season (100) in 2017/18.
It’s unsurprising, then, that they boast a formidable record against almost every single team in the division. But who has the best and worst records against Manchester City?
We’ve ranked the current Premier League crop by points per game — with goal difference and goals scored as the tie-breakers — across their last five league matches against Manchester City.
Recent results: 1-3, 0-3, 0-2, 0-2, 0-2 Goals for/against: 1/12 GD: -11 PPG: 0

Recent results: 1-2 Goals for/against: 1/2 GD: –1 PPG: 0
Luton are the highest-ranked of a five-team clutch of teams on zero points per game. Of course, they’ve only faced the champions once during that time period, pushing them all the way and even going in 1-0 up at half-time before eventually losing 2-1 back in December.
Recent results: 2-3, 0-1, 0-2, 3-3, 0-5 Goals for/against: 5/14 GD: -9 PPG: 0.2
Newcastle have had some close battles with Man City in recent times, especially since their Saudi cash injection. Before then, however, they endured a miserable record against Guardiola’s men. And even since their improvement under Eddie Howe, they still have just one point from their last five matches.
Recent results: 0-2, 1-3, 0-3, 1-1, 0-1 Goals for/against: 2/10 GD: -8 PPG: 0.2
Recent results: 1-3, 0-3, 0-2, 2-2, 1-2 Goals for/against: 4/12 GD: -8 PPG: 0.2
Recent results: 4-4, 0-1, 0-1, 0-1, 0-1 Goals for/against: 4/8 GD: -4 PPG: 0.2
Chelsea are the lowest-ranked of Man City’s so-called ‘Big Six’ counterparts on this list. The Blues, of course, beat City 1-0 in the 2021 Champions League final but since then, Guardiola has exacted ruthless revenge. City won each of the next six meetings across all competitions without conceding a goal; a run that only recently ended with a dramatic 4-4 draw and even that needed a 95th-minute penalty from Cole Palmer.
Chelsea travel to City this Saturday evening looking to end a run of four consecutive defeats without scoring at the Etihad across all competitions.
Recent results: 0-2, 1-1, 0-6 Goals for/against: 1/9 GD: -8 PPG: 0.33
Recent results: 2-1, 0-3, 0-3, 1-5, 0-1 Goals for/against: 3/13 GD: -10 PPG: 0.6
Wolves have an impressive recent record against the top teams at Molineux, winning six of their last seven matches against ‘Big Six’ opposition, including a 2-1 victory over Man City in the last meeting between the two sides.
Arsenal beat City 1-0 in October thanks to a late Garbiel Martinelli strike and the Gunners truly are title contenders under Guardiola’s old assistant, Mikel Arteta. However, that victory only served to end a run of 12 straight league defeats to City.
Recent results: 0-3, 2-1, 3-6, 1-4, 0-2 Goals for/against: 6/16 GD: -10 PPG: 0.6
Man Utd’s record in the Manchester derby has been progressively deteriorating since Guardiola’s arrival. In fact, it’s a testament to City’s domination that United are ranked sixth on this list despite just one win and four defeats in their last five league meetings. Most recently, the Cityzens completely outclassed their City rivals in a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford.
Recent results: 1-0, 1-3, 1-1, 2-3, 1-2 Goals for/against: 6/8 GD: -2 PPG: 0.8
Recent results: 2-2, 0-1, 2-4, 0-0, 2-0 Goals for/against: 6/7 GD: -1 PPG: 1
Recent results: 1-3, 1-0, 2-1, 0-2, 0-1 Goals for/against: 4/7 GD: -3 PPG: 1.2
While Man Utd and Chelsea have floundered, Brentford and Palace have pushed City all the way in recent times. The London pair are the first two clubs on this list to take one or more points per game against City in their last five meetings, with Brentford even recording a league double over them last season.
Recent results: 1-1, 1-4, 1-0, 2-2, 2-2 Goals for/against: 7/9 GD: -2 PPG: 1.2
Liverpool have been Man City’s closest rivals over the last five or six years and the only team to seriously test them, lifting the 2019/20 title and finishing second twice — including with 97 points in 2018/19.
In fact, Jurgen Klopp has arguably been Guardiola’s kryptonite at times, pulling off some huge wins in European and domestic cup competitions, while they’ve lost just one of the five league games taken into consideration for this ranking. 1.2 points per game is an excellent return.
Given their ‘Spursy’ reputation, you may well be shocked to find Tottenham top of this particular pile. But the Lilywhites have been simply sensational across their last five league meetings with City, winning three of them and losing just once. They’ve averaged two points per game, which 0.8 more than any other team, while they’re the only side to enjoy a positive goal difference across our given time period.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been Pep Guardiola’s bogey ground, failing to score at Spurs’ new ground in the Premier League. However, they did end the hoodoo in the FA Cup, thanks to a late winner from Nathan Ake.
