We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Everton 0 Newcastle 0.

We looked like the away team last week when we hosted Man City and we were delighted with the point we got.

The roles were reversed today, with Newcastle looking like the home side.

We had most of the possession, most of the territory, more attempts on goal, and all of the corners. We even contrived to miss a penalty. Everton will celebrate their point. We’ll be frustrated with ours.

Everton were as well organised as you’d expect a Sean Dyche team to be and we just didn’t have the talent to unlock them. If ever we wanted an illustration of the importance of a proper center-forward, this game provided it. It was tailor-made for Callum Wilson in particular.

I don’t think anyone played badly overall and we were always in control but then no one provided the moment of magic that would have got us three points.

My main gripe would be the lack of a good final ball. There were plenty of culprits, but to trot out a commentator’s cliche, a bit of composure in the final third would have got us the win.

Just to illustrate my comment above, about how no one was especially bad and no one was especially good, I had a quick look at the BBC website before sending this. They usually get around 15,000 people giving marks out of 10 to all of the players. All of our first XI scored more than 6 on average, and less than 7.

Nick Pope – 7

He had to make a couple of easy saves, one good one, and do a bit of sweeping up, but in honesty, we could have played any of our five keepers and it wouldn’t have mattered much

Kieran Tripper – 7

Not troubled much defensively and – as ever – drove a few attacks down our right.

However – in common with everyone else – didn’t stamp his authority on the game

Fabian Schar – 7

One of Fab’s easier afternoons.

Composed in defence, handled Everton’s physicality well, but wasn’t put under any pressure

Dan Burn – 7

See above.

A couple of occasions in the first half when Calvert-Lewin exposed his lack of pace, but once he’d got to grips with things, he was fine.

I thought he’d given away a stonewall penalty, but thank the Lord for 20 camera angles, a ref and a VAR department with decent vision. Must have gone to Specsavers

Lewis Hall – 7

He’s starting to look comfortable in the LB position and if his development continues, I don’t see Big Dan Burn getting the job back when Botman returns.

Like all of our defenders, he didn’t have a lot of defending to do, and was always looking to get up the park.

However, in common with many of his team mates, his final ball wasn’t quite good enough

Sandro Tonali – 6.5

Firstly, the good bits.

He popped up all over the pitch and he had a canny knack of being in exactly the right place at the right time. He seldom, if ever, got tackled, and he won the ball off the Everton midfield a number of times. ‘Won’ the penalty, but all he had to do was stand still and let that jug-eared carthorse Tarkowski haul him to the ground.

Then Mamma Mia! He just could not pass the ball today. He really did look classy until he wanted to give the ball to someone more than five metres away. Then he looked like me

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

He’s getting better, I think, and he was certainly way ahead of the Everton midfield. Played a couple of nice passes, battled well, but no real magic, and that’s what this game was crying out for.

Had a snapshot cleared off the line and missed another opportunity

Joelinton – 8

Our best midfielder today, in my humble opinion.

Swatted the Everton midfield aside like they were gnats and repeatedly drove at their defence.

Had a couple of chances but fluffed them.

However, if I had to pick a Player of the Match for us, I’d go big Joe by a whisker.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Started quite well – played one super cross on to Gordon’s head (shame it wasn’t Wilson or Isak), then slowly ran out of ideas. Another one who’s passing was awry.

Anthony Gordon – 7

He’ll be getting all the headlines but not for the reasons he (and we) would like.

Really had a go at Everton, tried his best, but he missed two gilt-edged chances to win the game for Newcastle. Another one who’s passing was off.

In hindsight, we should have had Tripps or Fab on penalty duties, because AG’s was woeful. We know he has the technique but he didn’t have the composure today.

Harvey Barnes – 6

Looked really good to start with but became more laboured as the game went on.

It didn’t help him (or Gordon, or Murphy, to be fair), that Eddie had to rotate the front three to try and effect a change. Gordon isn’t a centre-forward, and neither is Barnes

Miguel Almiron – 6

Looked lively when he came on, added a lot of energy and a small amount of threat.

Played a sumptuous pass in to Gordon for a glorious chance and had a couple of shots. To be honest though, he didn’t affect the game

Joe Willock – 5

Didn’t really get into the game much but not for lack of trying.

Tino Livramento – 7

Only on for 20 minutes but they were a good 20 minutes.

Positive, inventive and energetic.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him given a start against Brighton

Sean Longstaff – 5

Didn’t let anyone down but didn’t achieve anything noteworthy.

I could say that about just about everyone in white and green today.
