Coming into the summer, all eyes would have been on the transfer market and potential additions to the squad. However, Andrea Berta and Arsenal also faced the difficult task of sorting out the squad. Key decisions were to be made on potential departures and, most importantly, key players were to be tied down to new deals.

With regards to the latter, Ethan Nwaneri is the latest player to commit his long-term future to the club this summer following an official announcement. The Gunners had been locked in talks with the youngster all summer and, even though reports speculated the deal had stalled, Arsenal have finally tied him down to a new deal. The Premier League’s youngest ever player penned a five-year contract extension and joins Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Magalhães on the list of players to have their contracts extended this summer. The Gunners are not expected to stop there, so after Nwaneri, who’s next?

Leandro Trossard and William Saliba situations

Out of all the established players in the squad, only Leandro Trossard has just a year left on his current deal. The Belgian turns 31 in December, so any reluctance from an Arsenal point of view will be understandable. That said, Mikel Arteta is reportedly a big fan of the player and would be willing to keep hold of him in the face of heavy interest. A report in late July revealed the Belgian is stalling contract negotiations as he continues to evaluate his options, so we will have to wait and see.

Another player in line to sign a new deal is William Saliba. Unlike Trossard, the Frenchman has two years left on his current contract, but the Gunners are keen on extending his deal this summer. This is partly down to the prying eyes of Real Madrid, who have earmarked the defender as a top target and continue to monitor his situation. He recently provided a positive update regarding his future, replying “hopefully soon” when asked about his new contract. That will go a long way to reassure supporters, but nothing is certain until an official announcement is made.

Bukayo Saka could be next

Finally, another player who should be in line for a contract extension is Bukayo Saka. The winger has two years left on his current deal and there have been inklings of a new agreement in the offing. A report by Football London in April suggested the Gunners would be willing to break the bank to extend his contract, potentially making him their highest earner.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on because he might be the last high-profile name to extend his stay from the aforementioned trio.
