Amongst almost every other area of the squad, Manchester United’s goalkeeping unit will need to be replaced and strengthened this summer.

Indeed, both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have simply failed to live up to the expectations set of them after their 2023 moves, particularly the former, who’s accumulated a catalogue of costly howlers that have proven detrimental to results.

It now leaves United having to rectify not-so-recent mistakes, given they forked out a whopping £47.2 million to sign the Cameroonian from Inter Milan before the 2023/2024 campaign to succeed longstanding servant David de Gea.

After how he’s fared between the sticks since then, there’s no chance the club will recuperate a fee anywhere near what they paid.

Who could United sign to replace lacklustre Onana?

In regards to the Reds’ goalkeeper options, they have been linked with Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

They remain admirers of Porto shot-stopper and Portugal No.1 Diogo Costa, although it’s expected he’ll make the move to Manchester City to replace Ederson when the window opens.

ESPN journalist Mark Ogden believes the perfect, Premier League-proven option to fit Ruben Amorim’s needs will be available in the coming months – and could cost only £20m.

PL-proven Caoimhin Kelleher would be a perfect fit at Old Trafford

The issue, however, is that he plays for arch-rivals Liverpool. Caoimhin Kelleher has been a hugely dependable figure for both Jurgen Klopp and now Arne Slot to fill in for Alisson Becker when necessary, doing so seamlessly and, at times, putting in more eye-catching performances.

He is keen to take the leap this summer and become a club’s first-choice ‘keeper  —as opposed to playing second-fiddle to Alisson for yet another season.

Yet, it’s safe to say a deal that sees the 22-capped Republic of Ireland international move to Old Trafford is almost entirely ruled out.

“An interesting one  – I just don’t see it happening, but I think he’d be ideal for United – is Caoimhin Kelleher,” said Ogden. “I just don’t see Liverpool selling their number two to Man United, but Kelleher wants to move. He wants to play. Brentford have been linked with Kelleher but, you know, United would be a much better option for him.

“United and Liverpool don’t trade players, do they? But I think in terms of a goalkeeper who’s proved himself in the Premier League and will be relatively inexpensive at around £20, Kelleher to United would be a good deal. Like I say, the history between the clubs is such that they just don’t do deals.”
