Pensi ti abbia aiutato a farti crescere come giocatore?

AAF EXCLUSIVE, Ritsu Doan: ‘Happy to be at Freiburg, Japan still has to improve. Me in Italy? Who knows’

The World Cup in Qatar was more than positive for Japan, with the Samurai Blue, who despite failing to reach the quarter-finals, showed all their strength by playing with pride and showing great character. That’s what Ritsu Doan also thinks and he told us at All Asian Football, with the Freiburg attacking outfielder proving to be a very ambitious player. It was clear from his words, and although he is only 24 years old, he already shows he has the makings of a leader for the Japan of the future. With Doan, we spoke not only about the World Cup in Qatar, but also about his European adventure in general, with the former Gamba Osaka player not ruling out the possibility of seeing him in Serie A in the future. Through his words, Doan not only showed himself to be an ambitious boy, but also humble and with a great desire to continue learning.

THE PROFILE

Ritsu Doan was born in Amagasaki, Hyogo, on 16 June 1998 and his passion has always been football. He entered the youth sector of Gamba Osaka at a very young age and in 2012 with the under-15 team won the J-GREEN Sakai by beating Omiya Ardija 4-2 in the final. Doan immediately proved to have important qualities and in Osaka, a hothouse of great talents, decided not to waste time with him, promoting him to the first team at just 16 years old, then debuting in May in the AFC Champions League in the return match against the South Koreans of FC Seoul, coming in place of Hiroyuki Abe, with Gamba Osaka then triumphing 3-2 in that match. It was a dream debut for Doan, who also had the opportunity to make his J1 League debut in June in the match between the Nerazzurri and Kashima Antlers, playing only a few minutes as he came on in the 92nd minute for Sho Kurata.

Until the end of 2016, Doan plays for Gamba Osaka’s under-23 side, but it quickly becomes apparent that the J3 League is a tight fit for someone like him and he is promoted permanently to the first team. His first goals in the J1 League came in April 2017, with Doan scoring a brace in the 6-0 win over Omiya Ardija at the age of 18, and then repeating a few days later in the AFC Champions League by scoring a goal against Adelaide United, an Australian team. Doan’s qualities did not go unnoticed abroad and his J-League career was short-lived, with Groningen deciding to buy him on loan with the right of redemption in June 2017, with the player deciding to accept the European challenge even though he was very young.

In the Netherlands, Doan made an immediate impression and scored nine goals in his first season with the green-and-white club, breaking the record set by young Arjen Robben, who scored eight goals in his first season at Groningen. The Dutch club decided to buy him back on 23 April 2018 and in July Doan became a new player for the club. In the following season, Doan scored five more goals and signed three assists, with Groningen finishing the season in eighth place, the last position available to play in the Europa League qualification play-offs, where they were eliminated by Vitesse in the semi-finals. At the end of the season, an important prize arrived for Doan for what he had shown in his first two European years: PSV Eindhoven, won over by his talent, wanted to bet on him.

Ritsu Doan with the PSV Eindhoven (Fooballnews24.it)

It is impossible for Doan to refuse PSV, and the same is true for Groningen, who get a good 10 million euros from his transfer, with the negotiation making everyone happy. With the Eindhoven club, also considering the competition, Doan was not always a starter, but he made his mark in the middle of the field and managed to collect 3 goals and 3 assists in 27 appearances, also making his debut in the Europa League where he signed 2 assists. The following season, after playing only 1 month with PSV, he decided to leave the Eindhoven club on loan and moved to Arminia Bielefeld in Germany. He returned to playing consistently and shone again, signing 5 goals and 3 assists in 35 appearances, proving decisive in the salvation.

Returning to PSV in 2021 at the end of his loan and with more experience, Doan proved to be much more important for the Eindhoven club, with whom he signed 11 goals in 39 appearances, as well as scoring his first goal in a European competition by netting in the Europa Conference League against Danish side Copenhagen. At the end of the season, however, Doan did not fit into PSV’s plans, who then sold him to Freiburg for 8.5 million euros, with Doan thus returning to Germany. This season, Doan has already scored four goals, including one in the Europa League, in 24 appearances, as well as signing four assists, with the player growing a lot in the ranks of the red and white team. And Doan intends to continue to grow into a top player, with qualities that he certainly does not lack.

Hi, Doan, for us it is a pleasure to speak with you! After two years you are back in Germany and now you play for SC Freiburg. How do you rate your season so far?

“It’s good to be back in Germany, I love playing in the Bundesliga, it’s a good league, especially for us. We are doing well at the moment and I am very happy to be here in Freiburg.”

This is your sixth season in Europe, where you arrived in 2017 going to Holland to Groningen on loan from Gamba Osaka. In the beginning did you have problems to adapt yourself to european football or was it easy?

“Of course I had them, not big problems, but some small ones because it’s a different language, a different culture, even the food is different, my family was not here, it was difficult of course, but in the end that made me stronger”.

In Eredivisie, you also played with PSV Eindhoven, one of the best teams of Holland, and you won also your first trophy winning the Dutch Cup. Are you satisfied of your experience in Eindhoven? Do you think that this experince helped you to grow as a player?

“Yes, of course. PSV is a great club, one of the best clubs in the Netherlands and it was also a good experience to have the pressure to win every game, it’s not easy especially when you have to face clubs that for example are bottom or are newly promoted, this definitely made me a better player”.

When you was to Groningen, you played with Ko Itakura that now plays with Borussia Moenchengladbach and you have played the World Cup together. He is doing very well with his team and also with the national team. What do you think of your compatriot? How is the relationship between the two of you?

“Ko is one of my best friends, I’m still in touch with him, we talk during the week on FaceTime, I respect him as a person and a player, we both did well at the World Cup, he got injured before the World Cup, but he was strong in coming back. I’m proud of the way he played, and I also like him as a friend.”

Ritsu Doan and Ko Itakura celebrate after qualifying at the round of 16 at the World Cup (japantimes.com.jp)

Speaking of the World Cup, you scored two great goals against top national teams as Germany and Spain and despite the elimination against Croatia, it was a great World Cup for Japan and for you, with the national team that confirmed his growth. What are your ambitions with Samurai Blue seeing this great growth?

“Our goal was to finish in the top eight, but we were eliminated in the round of 16 and it was a very difficult time for us right after the elimination, but we showed our spirit and mentality in the games against top national teams like Germany, Spain and Croatia, I think we made the Japanese happy after the World Cup, but in the end we didn’t manage to finish in the top eight, so we have to improve in many ways in these four years and then we will try again”.

After the World Cup, the Japan Football Association has confirmed Hajime Moriyasu on the bench, despite some critics during the competition. How important is Moriyasu to you as a player? What do you think of your coach?

“Now we have spent four years together, he was also our coach at the Olympics. For me… how can I say, he is an inspiring person and he has pushed me so much in these four years, he is certainly a great coach and in fact we have done well thanks to him, that’s for sure. I respect his quality, I respect him as a coach and also as a person”.

The J1 League 2023 will start in a month. Are you keeping to follow your former team Gamba Osaka? What team do you think will be the champion this season?

“Yes, I am still following Gamba Osaka, especially last year when they were in the lower reaches of the table. They had to fight to stay in the top division, I followed some matches, especially in those difficult times. This season I hope Gamba Osaka can become champions, that is their goal, they have quality and I am looking forward to the new team”.

Japan is showing many fine talents in the recent years. What is your opinion on japanese football? Do you see similaraties between japanese football and german football?

“Yes there is some talents now, as you can see there are some players in England, in Germany, especially in Germany, this is making us strong as a country and as an Asian national team. I think they are not very similar German and Japanese, the German players are much more dynamic and stronger, the Japanese players are smaller and we need more quality with the ball, but in terms of mentality we are very similar, so I think we can learn a lot from Germany”.

There are some japanese players that have played in Italy as Yuto Nagatomo, Maya Yoshida, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Keisuke Honda. Have you ever watched a match of the Serie A? What do you think of italian football?

“Yes, especially when I was a kid, when there was Hidetoshi Nakata, Yuto Nagatomo also, Keisuke Honda, they were our idols, they played well and that’s why we wanted to be footballers. I watch it a lot and let’s see if I will have the opportunity to play in Italy (laughs ed.), but now I can’t say, let’s see, I don’t know”.

(Question from SC Freiburg PO) Have you ever met your idols then?

“Sure, Yuto Nagatomo was my teammate in the national team at the World Cup, Yoshida was our captain, I met Honda once. It’s nice to talk to them of course, it was nice”.

Many thanks to Ritsu Doan, Freiburg and Sascha Glunk for their helpfulness and kindness during this interview.

AAF EXCLUSIVE、
