Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert is hoping that the Blues can atone for last season’s disappointment in the Champions League after an early elimination by Barcelona.
Cuthbert was named Chelsea player of the season in 2024/25 for the second time in her lengthy career.
Last season Chelsea had a chance to finally rule Europe as well as England as they advanced to the Champions League semi-finals.
Despite reaching the latter stages in the knockouts Chelsea were humbled by Barcelona.
Their Spanish opponents showed their experience in Europe with two 4-1 wins sending the Catalonian side through to a final against Arsenal.
After being eliminated by Barcelona, Chelsea’s wait for an elusive Champions League title continued.
Blues veteran Erin Cuthbert arguably desires a European title more than anyone else in the team having played for Chelsea since 2016.
“I would love to win the Champions League; it’s the only trophy I haven’t won at the club. You need to have a good domestic season to be able to be firing on all cylinders. I don’t think you get one without the other.
“It’s certainly what the club wants, and as players, we do talk about it, we do want it, but there’s one thing wanting it and another thing doing it. It’s up to us to go and make it happen.”
Last year Chelsea still won the WSL despite European misery, making it six league titles in a row.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has now been in charge of the women’s team for one full season.
The Spaniard inherited one of the best squads in the world at the beginning of the year but winning the league was anything but a given.
“Sonia has a foot in the door, and she feels comfortable, so I think she’s going to hone in on exactly what she wants us to do now,” Cuthbert continued. “She’s going to demand a lot from us this season. The league is, of course, going to be tighter, maybe more so than last year.”
Although Chelsea will no doubt be favoured to win the league with Betting sites, last year’s Champions League winners in Arsenal are sure to be in the mix.
The Gunners recently signed Sofia Smith from Liverpool for the first-ever £1million transfer in women’s football.
“We built up a bit of a gap at the end of last season. That was due to our depth and the mentality and resilience we have in the squad, but it’s certainly getting tougher.
“Everybody thinks winning a league six times is easy, but honestly, it’s one of the hardest things to do in the world to keep up that level of consistency against high-quality opponents.”
Chelsea themselves have made four signings so far this summer with Mara Alber, Ellie Carpenter, Livia Peng and Becky Spencer all joining the Blues.
