Most of the talk in today’s press conference with Enzo Maresca was about two players we certainly won’t be seeing tomorrow – Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu have both picked up hamstring injuries, and won’t be back for a couple of months.

That story rather blew all of the existing narratives out of the water, including the previous hot topic, which was about Chelsea’s goalkeeper.

Robert Sanchez had finally been dropped after a series of high profile mistakes, with former backup Filip Jorgensen taking over for the match against West Ham last Monday night. Sanchez was then slightly confusingly back in the team on Saturday as cup keeper – but today Maresca’s words on the subject have made his intentions clear:

“The Filip [Jorgensen] solution was also to give Robert [Sanchez] some time to recover mentally and physically in general. The idea is not game by game to change the ‘keeper,” the manage explained, denying that he would be looking to change them for each match according to who did well.

“In the last Premier League game against West Ham, it was Filip and then in the FA Cup game, it was Robert but our ‘keeper in this moment is Filip.”

Jorgensen set for a chance as first choice as Maresca makes his aims clear

We would certainly have played Jorgensen in the cup just to get him in form and ready for his Premier League games to come, but there’s some logic to keeping the previous system going, just with the players reversed. We are now out of both domestic cups, so Sanchez will just have Conference League games to play – unless of course Jorgensen has some disaster games and himself gets dropped.

If that happens, it might be time to just blow the whole project up and start again, frankly.
