The Football Association (FA) and the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) have launched investigations into the incident, which saw hundreds of English fans subjected to heavy-handed tactics by local authorities.

Eyewitness accounts and footage shared on social media depict a tense situation outside the stadium, with riot police using shields and tear gas to control the crowd.

Fans reported being pushed and shoved, with some missing the start of the match as a result.

A witness told talkSPORT: “Incredulous how bad the organisation has been tonight. Our tickets not checked at the second perimeter, and could have photocopied them to get through first.

“Exit gate opened as tensions grew and the game kicked off. Shambolic.”

Jack Loftus, a fan who travelled from Telford, told PA Media (via The Guardian): “They went to adjust the queue at the front to make it narrower and longer and just did it with force.

“They were pushing the crowd amongst the fence. They ultimately treat us like animals, then they’ll act the victim if there’s retaliation.”

The FA has confirmed that it is gathering information on the incident, while UEFA is awaiting further reports before deciding on any potential disciplinary action.

Despite the off-field troubles, England bounced back from the shock loss at Wembley Stadium to seal a 3-0 victory with a depleted squad. Their next match is against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday.
