After Southampton and Brentford made it through to the EFL Cup quarter-final on Tuesday, the rest of the Round of 16 ties take place this evening.

Here’s what happened.

Tottenham advance at the expense of Man City

Scorers: Werner 5′, Sarr 25′; Nunes 45+4′

Tottenham hung on to advance through with an impressive 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglu’s side were ahead early on when their attack beat the Man City backline for pace and Timo Werner broke his goal drought with a bending effort that beat both the defender sliding in and the diving goalkeeper.

The home side doubled their lead when Pape Matar Sarr drilled in a low effort from 25 yards out.

Pep Guardiola’s side then pulled a goal back in first hald stoppage time with their first shot on target when Savinho picked out Matheus Nunes, who delivered the finish at the far post.

Liverpool survive Brighton comebacks to advance

Scorers: Gakpo 46′, 63′, Díaz 85′; Adingra 81′, Lamptey 90′

A Cody Gakpo brace helped Liverpool to a 3-2 win over Brighton that was more uncomfortable than it needed to be.

Making his full debut for Liverpool, goalkeeper Vítězslav Jaroš impressed early on, making a save when faced with a one-on-one situation with Tariq Lamptey.

Liverpool came out of the blocks fast in the second half and a superb hit from Cody Gakpo flew into the back of the net from the corner of the box with less than a minute on the clock.

The Dutchman got his and Liverpool’s second through a route one special as he latched on to a Jaroš goal kick and smashed home his finish.

Brighton were in no mood to give up easily though, and they won the ball back high up the pitch, forcing a save from Jaroš before Simon Adingra netted the rebound.

Yet it was only a brief moment of panic for Arne Slot’s side as Luiz Díaz hooked the ball away from the chaotic Brighton defence and finished from inside the box.

There was another twist though as Tariq Lamptey found himself in space on the edge of the box late on and managed to roll in the finish despite slipping on the grass as he kicked the ball.

Crystal Palace advance to quarter finals with win over Villa

Scorers: Eze 8′ Kamada 64′; Durán 23′

Crystal Palace made it through to the last eight with an impressive 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

The Eagles took the lead after a quick counter-attack when a looping cross from Daniel Muñoz was converted with a header from Eberechi Eze.

That was fairly short-lived as a fast break from Villa was finished low into the net by Jhon Durán.

After the break, Palace regained the lead when Japan international Daichi Kamada pounced on some defensive hesitation from Villa on the edge of the box and finished from range.

Van Nistelrooy steers Man Utd to big win over Leicester

Scorers: Casemiro 15′, 38′; Garnacho 28′, Fernandes 36′, 59′; Bilal El Khannouss 33′, Coady 45+3′

Interim Manchester United boss Ruud van Nistelrooy delivered a 5-2 win over Leicester in his first game in charge.

The home side got off to a flying start when Casemiro smashed a ridiculous shot from 25 yards into the top corner, and that lead was doubled when Diego Dalot put in a dangerous ball across the box for Alejandro Garnacho to convert with the Leicester defence stretched.

There may have been a familiar feeling of dread at Old Trafford when Leicester pulled one back through Bilal El Khannouss after some defensive fragility was exposed, but those fears were soon allayed.

A free-kick from outside the box delivered by Bruno Fernandes put daylight in between the sides, and Casemiro grabbed his brace following up to tap in when his initial header hit both posts.

In a frenetic first half, Leicester pulled one back just before the sides went in at the break as Conor Coady took advantage of more defensive chaos with a tap-in off a long ball into the box from a free-kick.

Into the second half and Fernandes added his second, running on to a poor back pass from Caleb Okoli and ran round the back of Danny Ward for a simple tap-in.

Newcastle get revenge over Chelsea after weekend defeat

Scorers: Isak 23′, Disasi 26′ (OG)

Newcastle avenged their loss to Chelsea last weekend with a 2-0 win over the Blues at St James’ Park.

With just two minutes gone, the home side went close to taking the lead as Joelinton got on the end of a cross from Alexander Isak but his effort crashed against the post and bounced out for a goal kick.

That was a warning sign for Chelsea, as hesitancy at the back was capitalised on by the lively Isak as he reacted first to put the magpies in front.

And there was more defensive chaos when Eddie Howe’s side doubled their lead when Axel Disasi turned in a cross into his own net just three minutes later.

Arsenal cruise to win over Preston

Scorers: Jesus 24′, Nwanieri 33′, Havertz 57′

There was to be no banana skin for Arsenal as they registered a 3-0 win over Preston at Deepdale.

Mikel Arteta’s men broke the deadlock thanks to a set piece, when Jakub Kiwior’s downward header was smashed home by Gabriel Jesus.

Preston were two goals behind when Ethan Nwanieri bent a sublime curling effort beyond ‘keeper Freddie Woodman.

Into the second half and the Gunners had their third when Kai Havertz delivered a strong header into the back of the net from a Kiwior ball in.

The draw for the last eight will take place following the conclusion of this evening’s fixtures, with the ties to be held on week beginning Monday, December 16th.
