Newcastle United will be without Eddie Howe for their crucial clash against Manchester United. The manager has been hospitalised after feeling unwell for several days.
It was already known that Howe had been struggling with illness this week. He had remained at home, bed-bound, while assistant Jason Tindall led training and media duties. But on Saturday evening, the club confirmed that the situation had worsened.
“Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness.
The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.
Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.
Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club’s first team staff.”
The update comes just 24 hours after Tindall spoke to the media with optimism about Howe’s potential return. At the time, he suggested that the boss was in regular contact and expected to be back on the sidelines. But the situation has clearly changed.
“He’s been really ill and has been in bed the last few days,” Tindall said. “We hope he will be OK for Sunday. We’ve been in daily contact, speaking three or four times a day, so it’s not affected any of the preparations.”
“It’s not very often Eddie is not able to come to work. It is a bit different. But we’ve got a fantastic group of lads who know what they need to deliver.”
This will be the first time Eddie Howe misses a match in charge of Newcastle since joining the club. It also comes at a critical point in the season, as the Magpies chase a strong finish in the Premier League.
Fans will be hoping for positive updates in the coming days.
For now, the entire football community stands with the Newcastle boss.
