Eddie Howe was asked about Callum Wilson at Friday’s press conference.

The striker has now been an ever present in the Newcastle United matchday squad for some time now, after his injuries issues earlier in the season.

Indeed, this current run of seven wins from the last eight matches, has seen Callum Wilson on the pitch in all eight games, off the bench.

Newcastle United will of course be fighting on four fronts next season, with the only thing to be decided in these next four games, is which European competition it will be in 2025/26 for NUFC.

Eddie Howe asked about Callum Wilson and especially what the future holds:

“He’s very much in my plans going forward, four games to go and he is a huge part of that.

“I think that he has looked better and better in recent weeks.

“You have got to understand that Callum has been going through a pre-season in the shop window, as in – on the pitch, which is very difficult to do, but he needs the games to get back to his best form.

“I think he is getting there now.

“Physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old.

“He has stayed fit for a long period of time, which has been brilliant to see.

“I think on his long-term future, let’s wait and see how he performs and how he continues to look”

A major debate amongst Newcastle United fans has been whether or not it would be a positive move to keep Callum Wilson at the club, especially with the extra demands of European football next season.

Back in February, The Athletic revealed that Newcastle United have a unilateral option with Callum Wilson.

The striker sees his current deal set to end on 30 June 2025 and it is up to the club whether to add another year on, plus they have the luxury of being able to wait until after this season had ended, to decide whether they want to take Callum Wilson up to 30 June 2026.

How the Newcastle United contracts situation now looks (via official club releases and media reports), when current deals are up:

End of June 2025:

Wilson, Gillespie, Ruddy, Lewis

End of June 2026:

Schar, Burn, Targett, Pope, Longstaff, Ashby, Hayden, Trippier, Krafth, Dubravka, Lascelles

End of June 2027:

Botman, Jacob Murphy, Willock

End of June 2028:

Tonali, Isak, Barnes, Livramento, Bruno, Miley, Joelinton, Alex Murphy

End of June 2029:

Kelly (now on loan at Juventus who have an obligation to buy), Hall, Gordon

Other than Callum Wilson, that would then leave only the following seeing their current deals set to conclude at the end of June 2025.

Jamal Lewis leaving for sure. Then Ruddy and Gillespie expected to leave as well, unless kept on as part of the backroom/coaching team.
