The veteran forward's deal comes to an end in the summer, but he has been extremely impressive this season.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Notts County are in an incredibly strong position in the League Two table, and after missing out on the play-offs last season, they have their sights set firmly on automatic promotion.
The race for a top three finish in the fourth tier is incredibly close with nearly nine teams in with a reasonable shout of going straight up to League One.
However, few teams have a player with as much quality as David McGoldrick and the veteran forward has rolled back the years with the Magpies this season. The 37-year-old has been outstanding in 2024/25, but there is one looming question about his future.
The former Derby County and Sheffield United star is out of contract at the end of the campaign and Notts County will be hoping to find out soon if he is willing to sign on for another year.
At 37, McGoldrick has aged like a fine wine, and he continues to create moments of genius, and he has trained his body in a way that has allowed him to continue to perform at this age.
However, he could be in the final months of his career if nothing is done about his contract situation, and it could be up to Magpies manager, Stuart Maynard, to convince him to carry on for another year.
Football League World has asked their Notts County Fan Pundit, Stephen Smith, if he believes McGoldrick has it in him to continue playing at this level.
He told FLW: "The way David McGoldrick takes care of himself he can go on for another three seasons in the Championship, never mind League One or League Two.
"I think this season he's proven that he should be given a new contract, and I believe that if Notts County go up and if Derby go down, I don't think he's going to retire after that. I think he'd want to play on just for the potential of playing Derby next season in two games."
Stephen continued: "I think next season, touch wood it’s in League One, he can still score goals. He can still get at least 15 goals in that league easily.
"In the last season before he came to us, he was still scoring goals. He scored about 25 goals for Derby, and he was about 35 then. So, there's no reason why he's not worthy of a new contract, and he can keep going."
McGoldrick has just got better with age, and although he has dropped down the divisions in the last couple of years, he has been able to show his class every season.
He was exceptional for Derby in the 2022/23 campaign, scoring 22 goals in League One as the Rams narrowly missed out on the play-offs in their first season in the third tier since the 1980s.
He added three more goals to his total in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy to take his total in all competitions to 25. He also scored his first three career hat-tricks during his time at Pride Park, and he was vital for Paul Warne.
Stepping back up to the division will be more difficult at a club that might not be in the position that Derby were in. However, he has more than enough quality to return to League One and make an impact. Therefore, his deal must be renewed by Notts County.
