Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed the idea of using Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde together in defence for their crucial encounter against Manchester City.
This decision hints at tactical changes as Ancelotti looks to manage a defence hit by injuries. One notable option being explored is deploying Ferland Mendy as a right-back.
This would allow Valverde to return to his preferred midfield role, maintaining balance across the pitch. With Tchouameni almost certain to feature as a centre-back, this adjustment affects the midfield setup by reducing competition for places.
In this scenario, three players—Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos, and Eduardo Camavinga—would be competing for just two midfield spots.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s attacking quartet of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham are seen as untouchable for Ancelotti, given their offensive prowess.

Ancelotti has made it clear that he does not believe sacrificing multiple forwards is necessary to achieve balance on the field. He emphasises that maintaining a potent attack is crucial for scoring goals, even if it requires fine-tuning the tactical setup.
His approach paid off during the recent derby, where a shift to a 4-4-2 formation, with Bellingham and Rodrygo operating on the wings, proved effective.
Looking ahead to the match at the Etihad, Ancelotti faces the challenge of assembling a cohesive midfield capable of competing with Manchester City for control of the ball.
The defensive reshuffle could impact the dynamics in midfield, but Camavinga has a strong chance of reclaiming his starting role. His recent return, even for just ten minutes in the derby, signals that he is ready to make a meaningful contribution.
As Real Madrid prepare for this high-stakes clash, all eyes will be on Ancelotti’s tactical decisions and whether they can propel the team to success against one of Europe’s toughest opponents.
