In the last few years, massive changes have taken place at FC Barcelona, and the impact of these changes is now being felt at the Catalans club as they completed a very good 2024-25 season in which they won the domestic treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
One of the most important of these changes was the appointment of Deco as the club’s Sporting Director. The Portuguese official replaced Mateu Alemany, whose work with Jordi Cruyff had been quite commendable, and initially, there were doubts whether Deco would be able to keep up to the expectations placed upon him.
However, the former midfielder has proven himself to be a highly competent official. His most recent successes have come in the aspect of contract renewals of some of the most important players in the Barcelona squad, something that was a priority for him.
On the other hand, the Portuguese official is not looking for many new players from the market, and wants only a goalkeeper and a left-winger.

As Diario AS has reported, Deco explained his decision to focus on renewals and bring in only a few reinforcements as he talked to the media while attending an event in Portugal. Regarding the club’s transfer policy, he said:
“No club is going to win every year; they just need to compete each year. We still have room to grow for a few more years. We shouldn’t fall into the trend of signing players unnecessarily. We have to look at what we have and what we actually need.”
“The winning Barcelona teams had players who arrived at the club with a name, and others who wanted to win big things. That’s what’s happening now.”
While not everyone will agree with him, the efficacy of such a policy was quite on display last season, as Barcelona won almost everything despite making only 2 additions in the summer transfer window.
Hopefully, Deco will continue to make the best possible decisions for the Blaugrana club going forward, and help them retain their status as one of the best clubs in Europe.
