One of the matters that FC Barcelona’s sporting management must resolve in the coming months is the contract situation of Frenkie de Jong.

The Netherlands international is contracted until 2026 and renewal talks have not progressed, with the midfielder having gone through various phases over the past few months.

Indeed, having not responded to the club’s initial renewal proposal, De Jong spent a large part of the season out injured before finding it hard to break into Hansi Flick’s plans after making his comeback.

At present, the midfielder is enjoying a good run of form, having started in the last two matches, with Hansi Flick’s trust in him growing.

Deco on Frenkie de Jong’s situation

Barcelona sporting director Deco had previously stated that discussions regarding the renewal of De Jong would take place in due time, and during an interview with SPORT, he continued to stand by this position.

When asked if he was more optimistic about the Dutchman’s renewal than a few months ago, the club’s sporting director replied:

“I do not change my opinion on players. For me, Frenkie is a great player.”

Deco praised the midfielder’s ambition and his recent comments about what he hopes to achieve as a Barcelona player.

“He himself has said that he feels frustrated at not having won as many titles at Barça as he thought he would when he arrived. That’s what we want, for that frustration to stay with him because it means he wants to keep winning things with Barça,” he said.

“He is a top-level player. Here we want players who want to win titles, not just players who want to be at Barça,” Deco added.

“From here, we are going to look for these profiles. As of today, 100% of the players we have are dreaming of this,” he further noted.

Concluding, Deco opened up on the renewal of the Barcelona midfield heavyweight, stating that everything will happen in its own time.

“We will talk about Frenkie when the time comes,” he concluded.
