Liverpool’s January transfer window discussions are heating up, particularly regarding potential outgoings and reinforcements. In a recent episode of Big Decisions from Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Jack McIndoe tackled pressing questions surrounding Wataru Endō, Tyler Morton, and Liverpool’s strategy for the rest of the season.
With Liverpool sitting at the summit of the Premier League and dominating their Champions League group, the January window presents a pivotal moment. Dave Davis highlighted the importance of capitalising on the current momentum: “If you’re a big team, if you’re an elite team, you do your business from a position of strength.” His sentiment echoed the urgency to act decisively while the squad remains in a commanding position domestically and in Europe.
Jack McIndoe supported this view, expressing concern over midfield depth: “If [Alexis] Mac Allister or [Ryan] Gravenberch were to get injured, you’re relying on the likes of Morton and Endō, and I don’t think they make the same impact.” The call for reinforcements aligns with Arne Slot’s need to shape the squad to his tactical vision. As McIndoe added, “Slot needs to bring in his type of players.”
The discussion shifted to potential outgoings, with Endō and Morton under the spotlight. Both players have struggled for significant minutes, raising questions about their roles moving forward. McIndoe suggested departures could be on the cards: “I think Endō and Morton will eventually leave. You don’t want to leave yourself short, but they aren’t making enough of an impact.”
Davis referenced a broader trend within Liverpool’s squad management: “It’s about who fits Slot’s system. The January window might see moves sanctioned if replacements are lined up.” He noted that while Endō’s European experience initially seemed promising, his limited integration under Slot suggests he might not be part of the long-term plan.

The podcast also emphasised the need to plan for Liverpool’s future, not just the current campaign. “It’s not just about this season,” Davis remarked. “Look at the contract situations and plan ahead.” This sentiment ties into potential departures, as offloading players like Endō and Morton could create room for new signings.
McIndoe reinforced the importance of proactive planning: “You need to be pre-planning for the years ahead. The squad needs players who can fit Slot’s philosophy and deliver consistently.” He also noted the importance of identifying the right profiles, adding, “It’s not about getting an out-and-out destroyer; it’s about finding the right maestro for the base of midfield.”
As Liverpool eye silverware on multiple fronts, the January window represents a crossroads. Whether through new arrivals or departures, decisions made in the coming weeks will shape the team’s trajectory. Davis summarised the stakes succinctly: “If they don’t do it now, are they going to do it? And if they don’t, will we regret it come the end of the season?”
For Endō and Morton, their futures hinge on both their performances and the club’s ability to secure reinforcements. Liverpool fans will be watching closely, hoping the club seizes the opportunity to strengthen during this critical period.
