David Prutton has discussed the situation surrounding Ruud van Nistelrooy's exit from Leicester City
David Prutton has issued a warning to Danny Rohl amid speculation he could take over at Leicester City.
The Foxes are seeking a new head coach following the decision to part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Dutchman was let go at the end of June, several weeks after the end of last season, with the club now preparing for life in the Championship after an 18th place finish in the Premier League.
It has been reported by Sky Sports that Rohl is one of the names under consideration to take over at the King Power Stadium, with a departure from Sheffield Wednesday expected this summer.
Prutton has raised his concerns over the situation at Leicester, and the length of time it took to make a decision about Van Nistelrooy’s future.
He warned any incoming manager of the challenge the Foxes face, but claimed they should still be in the mix for promotion given their recent history and their size.
“When a season finishes and, akin to what we saw at Spurs, just deafening silence,” said Prutton, via Benjamin Bloom’s YouTube channel.
“You think you either say ‘you got us in the mess, get us out of it’ or you say ‘you get us in this mess, thanks and see ya,’ you don’t wait.
“Because, the minute you start waiting, there’s something a bit fishy here.
“I don’t think there was any real clarity for the manager himself, possibly until he’s had this conversation, whenever.
“Obviously, there’s not just the football to sort out with Leicester, there’s the playing staff as well, there’s what they find themselves in with any potential punishment in EFL rulings — we shall soon see that.
“But, again, even though it does look a bit calamitous, I think you drop Leicester City into one of the teams that are favourites and should very much be discussed at top.
“Because of the size of the football club, the recent history.
“I understand that doesn’t necessarily feed into whatever happens right now, but whoever takes that challenge on — yes, it’s a challenge — it’s a hell of a football club though.”
Leicester will begin their season at home against Rohl’s current side Sheffield Wednesday on 10 August.
If Rohl takes over at Leicester after Sheffield Wednesday then he will be walking away from one messy situation and into another.
The Foxes could yet be handed a punishment by the EFL for a possible failure to follow their financial rules.
The club may also lack the spending power expected of a former Premier League club as a result, which will make competing for promotion trickier.
And he would be taking over later in the summer than managers would prefer, giving him less training time in pre-season to get to know the squad, which would present a challenge to any coach potentially coming in.
