David Ornstein confirms Man United deputy football director Andy O’Boyle set to leave club | OneFootball

Manchester United deputy football director Andy O’Boyle is set to leave the club, reports the reliable David Ornstein.

According to Ornstein, “Manchester United are set for more changes to their senior football leadership structure, with deputy football director Andy O’Boyle set to leave Old Trafford after two years in the post.”

“Subsequent to Murtough’s departure in April, O’Boyle assumed greater responsibility under the Sir Jim Ratcliffe regime following his investment into the club — and assisted INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford as he established a new hierarchy.”

“At the time United were waiting for Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth to take up their roles as chief executive, technical director and sporting director respectively, while Christopher Vivell has since been installed as interim director of recruitment.”

As mentioned by Orstein, O’Boyle returned to United in May 2022, 16 years after he served at the club in the capacity of an academy coach.

As the head of elite Performance in the Premier League, he was responsible for advising clubs on talent identification and recruitment, performance analysis, sports science and medicine, psychology, and loan management.

He played a key role in the Premier League’s response to the Covid pandemic, working hand-in-hand with the government and clubs on efforts to keep football going through the pandemic.

He also previously held roles at Liverpool, England U21s, Coventry and Wrexham.

When he joined the Red Devils, it was stated that he would provide support to Murtough – who was football director at the time – in driving United’s football strategy across the first team, academy and women’s team.

While working as a coach at the club, O’Boyle worked with young players, including Marcus Rashford.

A lifelong United fan, O’Boyle lined up for the 20-time English champions as a youngster in a Manchester United Centre of Excellence in his native Northern Ireland before switching careers to football administration.

Ornstein notes that O’Boyle was “heavily involved” in United’s summer transfer business, which saw the club bring in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.
