Eddie Howe having stated the match that United weren’t ‘clinical enough’ in the final third.

Danny Murphy agreeing that this was true, but at the same time, saying Newcastle United ‘looked a really good side’ and were better than Brighton.

Murphy on the money here, as despite playing away from home against a top half opposition side, Newcastle were the dominant side and were clearly ahead in all areas when you look at the key stats (see below) regarding corners, possession, touches by players in the opposition penalty area, number of shots, number of efforts on target.

The previous seven games (all competitions) had seen Newcastle United score 20 goals and on Sunday they fell short of that kind of goalscoring, not making the most of so many very good situations.

Danny Murphy talking about Newcastle United after the 1-1 draw at Brighton, speaking on Match of The Day 2:

“Eddie Howe said in one of his post-match interviews that their problem was they just weren’t clinical enough, which is right.

“But actually, it was an accomplished performance.

“They were better than Brighton.

“They looked a really good side.

“The only thing that was lacking, which is unusual with the quality forwards they have got, was that bit of calmness and decision making in the final third.

“Other than that, Eddie Howe should be really pleased with the level of performance.

“They controlled the game for long periods and had a lot of joy down the left side.

“It is just about finding the right option.”
