A Maldini wearing blue and black stripes is hard for AC Milan fans to get their head around, but Daniel Maldini believes it was the ideal move.

As a Milan academy graduate, many hoped that Daniel Maldini was on a path to continuing the family dynasty at the club. However, he decided to move to Monza in the last summer transfer window and on a free transfer too.

The Rossoneri inserted a clause into the deal which meant they would be somewhat protected in the future, in the event he were to do well with Monza and earn a big move. Sure enough, a few months later he joined Atalanta and Milan pocketed around €7m from the sale.

Interviewed by L’Eco di Bergamo, Daniel Maldini was asked about his decision to move to Atalanta in the January transfer window and how he hopes to develop, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“Initially, it seemed all set for the summer. Then I felt the strong determination of Percassi and mister Gasperini: they pushed for me to come immediately, and so the choice became very simple,” he began.

“When a club makes you feel so wanted, you can’t wait too long. It was clear that it was the ideal place to take an important step in my career. A serious club, very well organized, with structures that allow you to always give your best.

“At Zingonia [the Atalanta training complex] I had confirmation of what I imagined from the outside. Although I must say that in my career so far, from Milanello to the centre of Monza, I have always found excellent conditions to work.

“The surname? I don’t see it as pressure. I know it may seem strange, but I’ve always been used to living with this situation and it has never bothered me, not even as a child. More than a burden, it’s something you get used to managing naturally.

“Certainly my father, with his experience, is precious. He gave me important advice, but the whole family always supports me in my choices, including this move to Atalanta. It’s fundamental to have people close to you who support you.”
