If one Rangers player has yet again done a great job of winning over Ibrox fans, it has to be Cyriel Dessers. The Nigerian striker has once again shown up among the highest stages in the land in the form of the Champions League qualifiers and scored and assisted in abundance. Cyriel Dessers Rangers stats are outstanding.
Bear in mind this is a lad who offered a goal and an assist against PSV Eindhoven under Michael Beale almost two seasons ago. He has experience of this level and we would put our necks on the block to say that the Champions League qualifiers are at least equal if not higher to the Europa League stage. This is not easy. This is not an easy level and Cyriel Dessers is thriving there.
Once again against Viktoria Plzeň, the former Feyenoord striker managed an assist and an outstanding penalty. And indeed his assist in itself was rather outstanding—a beautiful touch that Gassama finished rather well indeed.
The fact is Dessers just keeps on proving his doubters wrong. In all fairness, on top of that, he probably doesn’t have as many of those doubters as he used to. His record speaks for itself. He’s managed 6 goals and assists in 11 Champions League qualifiers. That’s an outstanding return at what is essentially the second top level in Europe.
Dessers has been with Rangers since 2023 and he’s had a chequered relationship with Rangers fans. But once again against the Czech side last night, Dessers shone. He keeps on doing it. He keeps on scoring and last year he was a top scorer. There is little else Dessers really has to do to prove himself to Rangers fans. His detractors have reduced massively and his stats have continued to grow exponentially.
Why Russell Martin, Rangers manager, has seen fit to use Danilo instead of him, only the curtains man knows himself. Yes, we’re still not massive fans of Rangers’ current coach, but nevertheless Dessers getting his first start of the season on the fourth attempt showed why he should have been there from the beginning.
True, there’s transfer speculation around him and true AEK put a bid in. But the fact is that Dessers remains at Rangers. He’s said many times that he wants to be at Rangers and he seems to be quite happy at Rangers. He has support in the fanbase a lot more now than he did and it’s because he keeps on proving those doubters wrong.
Nice one, Cyriel.
