Friday morning brought news that another offer has been made for Marc Guehi by Newcastle United.

This followed a third offer of £60m (£55m guaranteed and another £5m of potential future add-ons) having been rejected earlier this week.

The Mail said that their information was that this new offer would rival, maybe even exceed, the £59m plus £4m potential add-ons that was paid by Newcastle United for Alexander Isak two years ago.

The various media followed up The Mail report with claims that the total package was around the £65m mark, in this fourth offer.

Well, Crystal Palace don’t appear to have taken long to consider it…

Friday afternoon now seeing The Telegraph report (see below) that Newcastle United still haven’t met Palace’s valuation and no acceptable deal is on the table.

This latest exclusive saying no Marc Guehi deal if happening as things currently stand, is from Sam Wallace, who is Chief Football Writer at The Telegraph.

However, to be honest, this report makes it sound more like he is working for Crystal Palace…

The Telegraph report – 16 August 2024:

‘Crystal Palace consider the potential transfer of their captain Marc Guehi to Newcastle United no closer with the Saudi-owned club still short of the valuation that the Palace ownership place on the England international.

Palace have been clear from the start that Newcastle need to hit a certain price with add-ons that are achievable for the deal to be considered – and currently Newcastle have not reached that. While neither side has ever been explicit about Palace’s price, it is thought to be in excess of £70 million.

The Palace investors who own the club are in agreement that there is no requirement to sell this summer and Guehi’s value – as a 24-year-old first choice England centre-back – is only likely to rise. Newcastle are reported to have offered £65 million.

While Newcastle have qualified for the Champions League once under the Saudi-consortium led ownership, qualifying for that competition every year is by no means certain…

There is a strong possibility that there will be even greater competition for Guehi come January when it is likely that more habitually successful clubs than Newcastle are also making long-term decisions about budget and squad planning.’

The way that this is presented from The Telegraph is laughable. Quite clearly they have been fed this directly by Crystal Palace and happy to go along with presenting this Palace PR nonsense.

The Telegraph happy to go along with the disparaging comments on Newcastle United regarding the Champions League. Would they be saying this if it was Chelsea or Man U for instance?  The truth is that it is very competitive when it comes to qualifying for the Champions League these days and most people would see little difference in the chances of the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Man U.

Marc Guehi has repeatedly refused to sign a new Crystal Palace contract and the idea that he will be able to command a far higher price in January, when he will have only a year and a half left on his contract, is bizarre.

When The Telegraph include this… ‘There is a strong possibility that there will be even greater competition for Guehi come January when it is likely that more habitually successful clubs than Newcastle are also making long-term decisions about budget and squad planning.’

Last January, next to no money was spend by all the Premier League clubs combined.

The January 2025 window is in exactly the same accounting period (the 2024/25 season) as this summer 2024 window, so we are supposed to believe that whilst not one of the ‘more habitually successful clubs’ are even trying to buy Marc Guehi now, they apparently will all be queuing up and fighting over him in January 2025???

Surely the reality is that the defender’s value will only go down, if he is not sold this window and Palace don’t get him to sign a new extended contract, which looks to have no chance of happening. Whilst if Marc Guehi gets a bad injury and/or has a bad run of form between now and January, exactly what would his value be then?
