The Eagles are set to step up their interest in Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga should they sell Marc Guehi.
Crystal Palace are expected to step up their interest in Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga, should the Eagles sell club captain Marc Guehi.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man has rediscovered himself during the last 18 months at The Den, originally joining on loan before completing a free transfer last summer.
Solidifying the Lions' backline with his leadership, physicality and natural ability to read the game ahead of others, Tanganga has showcased why he is destined for a return to the Premier League, with a number of clubs interested in making a move for him on a cut-price deal.
It has been reported Millwall inserted a £1.2 million release clause into the 26-year-old’s contract, with only Premier League sides able to activate it.
In recent developments, Crystal Palace are the latest side to register an interest, and they will have significant pulling power should they maintain their place in next season’s Europa League.
As per the Daily Express, Crystal Palace have joined the race to sign Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga.
The Eagles will be rivalling Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland for his signature, with the promoted trio all registering a concrete interest and are all understood to be prepared to meet his £1.2m release clause for top flight clubs.
A sale to Selhurst Park is all dependent on whether Marc Guehi leaves the London outfit, but it could be a possibility as the England international has once again been linked with a move to Newcastle United.
The report also states that because Palace are a more stable Premier League club, they would have the edge in the pursuit, with Tanganga wanting his future sorted by the end of the month.
Crystal Palace have also been touted to make a £45 million move for Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande to replace Guehi, but Tanganga is seen as a very shrewd option given his previous exposure to the top-flight.
It would have been intriguing to see who would come out on top between Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland to secure Japhet Tanganga’s signature, but Crystal Palace entering the fold means there’s a clear favourite in the race.
The Eagles, while not guaranteed, have the potential to offer European football next term, and Tanganga will be desperate to show what he can do at the highest levels.
Meanwhile, there’s naturally a higher likelihood that Tanganga will be playing Championship football the following season if he signs with any of the newly promoted teams, whereas a move to Palace is only sure to see him compete in the Premier League for years to come.
