Crystal Palace have entered the race to sign Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot before the close of the transfer window.
The 19-year-old has been identified as a late target for Oliver Glasner’s squad as Palace look to strengthen their defence.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Toulouse are open to selling the teenager for around €20m (£18m).
That valuation follows a rejected bid from Aston Villa last week, with the Ligue 1 club holding firm on their asking price.
Canvot signed his first professional deal last summer, committing his future to Toulouse until 2029.
He made his senior debut in September and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most highly rated prospects in French football.
The defender featured 18 times in Ligue 1 last season, including 12 starts under manager Carles Martinez.
This campaign he has played every minute of Toulouse’s opening league matches, helping the side secure victories over Nice and Brest.
His progress has also been recognised at international level after he impressed for France at the Maurice Revello Tournament in June.
Scouts across Europe have tracked his performances closely, with reports highlighting his strength, anticipation and ability on the ball.
Canvot is primarily a centre-back but has also shown he can operate in midfield when required.
Palace’s interest comes at a time of uncertainty around captain Marc Guehi, who has less than a year left on his contract.
The England international has long attracted interest from Liverpool and is not expected to agree an extension at Selhurst Park.
The club are therefore weighing up several young defenders who could develop into a long-term replacement.
Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong is another name under consideration as Palace prepare for possible departures.
The Eagles have been active in the market but have so far added only goalkeeper Walter Benitez and full-back Borna Sosa to the first-team squad.
They are also seeking reinforcements further forward after the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal last week.
Canvot is viewed as a player with significant potential resale value given his age, versatility and contract length.
Whether Palace meet Toulouse’s valuation remains to be seen, but time is running short with the deadline approaching.
For now, the French club continue to insist on €20m, and both Villa and Palace will have to decide whether to return with improved bids.
