Coventry City are preparing to embark on their first full season with Frank Lampard as manager.
The England and Chelsea legend took charge of the Sky Blues in November 2024, where he would pick up points in 21 of the side’s 31 remaining Championship games.
This culminated in a play-off semi-final clash against Sunderland, where Coventry came agonisingly close to beating out the Black Cats.
Lampard has added Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Miguel Ángel Brau and Carl Rushworth to his ranks this summer and still has time to make some extra signings before the start of the season.
Football League World’s Coventry City fan pundit, Chris Deez, has highlighted some targets that the Sky Blues should be looking at in the coming weeks, to give them the best chance at fighting for promotion.
“We desperately need two positions covered,” stated Chris. “We need a proven goalscorer in light of our attacking issues last season and the fact that Haji Wright spent four months out injured, but was still our top scorer.
“We also really need a strong, experienced centre-back to play alongside Bobby Thomas because Liam Kitching has been quite inconsistent and Luis Binks has now been sold. I wasn’t really sure why we signed him on a permanent for so much money and why he was our top earner either.
“I would absolutely be going in for a player like Oli McBurnie. I know he had an inconsistent time over in Spain at Las Palmas. But he's a proven goalscorer.
“He's had a few seasons now of being in and out of the team. He didn't play much for Sheffield United in the last season that he was with them, but he's a good goalscorer. He knows the Championship well.
“He was good for Swansea as well, so I'd absolutely be in for him. I'm pretty sure he's available on a free at the moment as well, so that's one that I would push to get done as soon as possible.
“In terms of that strong, experienced centre-back, I'd be going in for somebody like Craig Dawson, who is again a free agent. He’s got bags and bags of experience in the Premier League.
“I'm sure he'd take a little bit of a pay cut to stay local. He was most recently at Wolves, so staying within the Midlands would suit him.
“I'd just like to think that the lure of playing for Frank Lampard, an English and Premier League legend, might be enough to bring a player of his calibre to the club and, even at 35 years old, I still think he'd bring something that we've been sorely lacking for at least a few seasons now.”
McBurnie is a free agent following his Spanish escapade with Las Palmas, where he netted five times and provided six assists in 35 appearances.
The 29-year-old showed during the 2022/23 campaign that he can still be a deadly Championship forward, scoring 15 goals in 38 Championship games, and would therefore add some much-needed firepower to the Sky Blues’ attack.
Dawson has been a Premier League regular for over 12 years, and with his stint in the top-flight seemingly at an end, would provide a brilliant defensive option for Lampard and Co.
His experience and know-how would surely rub off on the Sky Blues' other defenders and prove to be a crucial asset over 46 games.
If Coventry could add these two to their ranks, it would only help their chances of fighting for promotion next term.
