The Sporting star was expected to provide a second windfall for Coventry City
Coventry City will not receive anything from a Viktor Gyokeres sale this summer, despite agreeing a sell-on clause when selling him in 2023.
The Championship side sold the Sweden international in a deal that could have potentially risen to €26m, with a sell-on clause attached.
Tongues were therefore wagging when the striker bagged 54 goals in all competitions last term, catching the eye of the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.
But now, in a bombshell reveal, talkSPORT have confirmed Coventry will receive nothing, regardless of what happens with Gyokeres this summer.
Having bought the striker for just £1m from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021, the Sky Blues were already well in profit from the original fee agreed with Sporting two years ago.
But, cleverly, they inserted a sell-on clause in case, as he did, Gyokeres progressed even more and increased in value.
The amount they were due first stood at 15 per cent of any profit the Portuguese side made. However, Sporting retained an option to pay an additional €1m to reduce Coventry’s cut to 10 per cent, which they did.
With Sporting’s club president, Frederico Varandas, talking about fees in excess of €70m for the striker, it was still set to be a handsome payday.
But those hopes have now been dashed.
It has now been reported by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook that Coventry actually sold the whole sell-on clause at the beginning of last season to fund transfers that summer.
Crook stopped short of revealing how much the Sky Blues received to waive those rights.
The Championship club reportedly spent £18m last summer, presumably with some of the additional funds raised from Gyokeres’ sell-on clause sale, which funded the likes of Jack Rudoni and Matt Grimes.
Coventry fans have spent the start of this summer dreaming of where they might be able to invest any extra Gyokeres funds, but this news may mean it’s now back to the drawing board.
This fresh update does not materially impact how good a transfer Gyokeres was for Coventry.
He netted 41 Championship goals for the club over two seasons, before turning an incredible profit in the space of just two years.
However, in the short term, this will still be painful news for those connected to Coventry, who were hoping to have an additional windfall this summer to reinvest after Frank Lampard’s strong end to the season.
It will put a dampener on those thoughts for Coventry fans, but in time, they will still appreciate how well their Gyokeres deal worked out.
